  3. Introduction • Many versions of Photoshop have this feature • CS4 needed for Vista • Why Layers? • Layers as separate images • Layers can be merged • (Ctrl + E) or Layers > merge down

  4. Managing Layers • The layers window allows easy management of layers. • If layers panel is not visible go to Windows > Layers. • Layers are listed from top most to bottom. • Opacity of Layers • Blending Modes • Icons for quick actions Top most layer Bottom most layer

  5. Managing Layers Cont’d • Groups allow changes to be made to multiple layers • Folder Icon • Layers > New > Group • Visibility: Eye icon

  6. Creating A New Layer • Click on paper icon • Layers > New > Layer • Shift + Ctrl + N • To create a copy of a particular layer • Right click the layer > Duplicate Layer > OK • Layers > Layer via Copy • Click and drag layer to the paper icon.

  7. Deleting A Layer • Select layer and click trash can icon and select Yes • Drag layer to trash icon. • Layers > Delete > Layer > Select Yes • Right click layer > Delete > Select Yes

  8. Layer Masks • Concept: To hide parts of image, without removing them • Click mask icon, and make selections on image • Everything NOT selected will be masked

  9. Adjustments • Many types of adjustments • Click Adjustments Icon • Image > Adjustments

  10. Blend Modes Group Also Selected Layer Visibility Mask Groups Link Delete Adjustments New
