Geography

Environmental Hazards

A tropical storm is a large, rotating area of very strong winds, clouds, and thunderstorms.

Tropical storms are known by a variety of names, depending on the area they affect. In the Caribbean they are known as hurricanes; in South East Asia as typhoons; in the Bay of Bengal (Indian Ocean) as cyclones and near Australia as willy-willies.

  • Naming Hurricanes

  • - Current system adopted in 1979

  • - They are given girls or boys names in alternating alphabetical order(except Q and U)

  • - When a storm reaches wind speeds of 120km/h, the National Hurricane Centre names the storm.

  • - Once a hurricane has caused great damage, its name is “retired” from the lists.
