Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| European Funding Support at QM – Pre-Award • Dissemination of funding opportunities via email, dedicated RGA web pages (accessible via QMUL staff intranet) and departmental briefings; • One-to-one advice on developing research ideas into proposals along with funding and management (administrative) implications thereof; • Registration of the proposal (if obligatory) on behalf of the PI if so requested; • Providing written contributions to proposal, especially non-technical aspects such as management of project, added value of project to EU policy, justification for resources sought; • Completion of supporting documents, e.g. administrative forms and legal documentation; • Generation of internal costing and overall project budget (where QMUL is co-ordinator); • Submission of the proposal on behalf of the PI by online submission (EPSS) or by post if so stipulated; • If successfully evaluated, conducting contract negotiations on behalf of the PI and revision of the budget and work programme with the PI if required by the EC.

  4. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| Financial issues - Costings and cost models A form of Full Economic Costs will be brought in under FP7 as is used for UK-funded research (with flat rate and lump sum financing for smaller projects) – but will not be fEC-based! The conversion of fEC funding to fit in with EC regulations for FP7 funding is being conducted by Universities UK and exercise, which should have been completed by end January 2007. For universities, 75% of direct eligible costs will be reimbursed with a flat rate of 75% applied for indirect costs – the indirect cost intervention rate may gradually decrease in later years of FP7. (COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS ONLY). Full-cost funding will probably only affect larger-scale bids in the Co-operation Specific Programme (for consortium-based collaborative research projects). For Co-ordination and Support Actions, 100% of direct eligible costs plus 7% overheads funded. Flat-rates will be applied to People programme projects (FP7 Marie Curie Actions) while lump-sum financing will be provided for European Research Council grants under the Ideas Specific Programme. (100% of direct eligible costs plus 20% overheads) For information/advice please contact Reuben Almeida

  5. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| What is FP7 for? • In order to realise these objectives, it is necessary to promote four types of activities: • Trans-national co-operation in policy-defined themes (“Co-operation”) • Investigator-driven research based on the initiative of the researcher (“Ideas”) • Support of individual researchers (“People”) • Support of research capacities (“Capacities”)

  6. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| The Seventh Framework Programme – comprising four ‘Pillars’: I. *Co-operation - Collaborative Research II. *Ideas – Frontier Research III. *People – Human Potential IV.Capacities – Research Capacity * Denotes those of possibly most interest to QM researchers

  7. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| The Seventh Framework Programme • I. CO-OPERATION – Collaborative Research (€32 365 million) • Thematic Priorities • Health • Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology • Information and Communication Technologies • Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production • Technologies • Energy • Environment (including Climate Change) • Transport • Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities • Security • Space • Call URLs and Draft Work Programmes for above Thematic Priorities are available to download from: • http://qm-web.finance.qmul.ac.uk/RGA/PA/EUhome.htm

  8. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| The Seventh Framework Programme • CO-OPERATION • Across all these themes, support for trans-national co-operation will be implemented through: • Collaborative research; • Joint Technology Initiatives; • Co-ordination of research programmes; • International Co-operation (specific calls).

  9. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| The Seventh Framework Programme: Collaborative Research

  10. Work Programme – 2007 (1st call only) 1. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| I CO-OPERATION: Collaborative Research project types • Small- and medium-scale focused research projects: • Targeting specific objective in a clearly defined overall approach • Fixed overall work plan • Large-scale/ Integrating Collaborative projects: • Ambitious objective-driven research with a ‘programme approach’ • Coherent, flexible and updateable set of activities • RTD activities, demonstration, Tech Transfer, training, dissemination, knowledge management and exploitation • Networks of Excellence: • Supports long-term durable integration of research resources and capacities • Jointly executed research to support integration • Joint training programme • Dissemination and communication plus coherent framework for management

  11. Work Programme – 2007 (1st call only) 1. Growth, Employment and competitiveness in a knowledge society - Changing Role of knowledge throughout the economy - Intangible investments and innovation in Europe;- Internationalisation and networking of research and innovation activities and systems;- The evolution of the service economy in Europe and its relations to productivity, growth, employment and welfare;- Globalisation and its effects on Europe's growth, employment and competitiveness;- The role of finance for growth, employment and competitiveness;- The impact of European demographic developments on growth, employment and competitiveness;- Macroeconomic policy, its interaction and co-ordination with other policies. Research Funding ||| Reuben Almeida ○ r.j.almeida@qmul.ac.uk ○x7962 ||| I CO-OPERATION: Work Programme document Identifying research topic matching your own interest(s) Due to the interdisciplinary nature of FP research funding, the work programmes aim to provide funding for projects involving a number of disparate specialisms so do not seek to identify an opportunity based on the name of the Thematic Priority alone. (Update your ERID entry!) The Work Programme should list the “activity areas” for which proposals are called in the table of contents, though not always the case. Work Programmes for 2008/9 are expected to be published in late July. UKRO visit on 17th June will provide further information Specific research topics: Content/scope: Specifications of research sought, activities to be funded Funding scheme: Small-scale, large-scale or Network of Excellence Specific features: Funding for projects with SMEs, industry-led or non-EU countries, e.g. USA, China, India, etc. Expected impact: Overall result, applicability to industry/policy, possibly societal value Other information: Foreseen composition of consortia, likely budget per project Open in call: Call identifier, e.g. FP7-NMP-2007-1-RTD
