  1. Reading Logs Possible Goals: • Read for at least 25 minutes on Tuesday and Thursdays. • Open my book at least once a day. • Read for at least 10 minutes at home on nights I have soccer practice. • Write 2 predictions and 2 inferences to practice the difference between the two. • Do not use any retell comments and use at least 2 connections. • Use “For example…” sentences with specific text details in at least (2,3,4) comments.

  2. Working to Add Specific Text Details • Lei is kind hearted, caring, and by the author’s description seems beautiful. She also acts confident in what she believes in and knows what she wants. (page 475) • In my opinion, Lei seems kind hearted, caring, and when the author describes her as “….” she seems beautiful. She also acts confident in what she believes in like when she….

  3. Add a “For example,…” Sentence • I infer that Jonathan’s mother will have to take the colt back to the Red Mountains eventually because he seems to be very important to her. For example, …. (give a text details that SHOWS how important the colt is to Jonathan’s mother) (page 63)

  4. Comments with Specific Text Details • I predict that Ava will grow close to Jax on his day off with her because the author foreshadows it at the end of the chapter by saying, “she felt the most like herself than she had in weeks.” (page 124) • I predict that when Kronos army comes it will be much larger than the camps army because Chiron said to Percy, “this isn’t enough.” I think that somehow they will leave and come back in the next book, because the conclusion is in the last book (page325)

  5. Finding the Key Idea When you are asked to find the key idea/central idea of a text: - For nonfiction texts, ask yourself: What are the most important points the author is trying to get across?Put this in your own words, you are providing a claim - This is a think and search question – you have to pull ideas from different parts on the chapter and put them into one big idea

  6. Going Over the Journal Rubric • Classwork grade • Graded on rubric provided (4-1)

  7. Book Groups Cycle • Read chapter independently using the post-it notes to keep track of significant passages, questions, etc. • Brainstorm ideas for journal prompt • Write journal entry • Book Group Discussion • Some large group share-out

  8. Journal Entry for Chapter 1 • Part 1: What is the central/key idea of this chapter? Support your claim with evidence from the chapter. (At least4 sentences, Claim, evidence, evidence, analysis) • Part 2: There are many different accounts of slavery experiences in this chapter. Pick two excerpts that best express the different types of narratives found in this chapter and explain why you chose them. (At least4 sentences, Excerpt 1, Excerpt 2, at least 2 sentences that explain why you chose them). Done? Double check the rubric!

  9. Small Group Discussion Questions • Share your answers to your journal prompts – what are the differences and similarities between your answers? • What did you find was the most surprising or shocking passage and why? • What were the facts that surprised you the most? • Are the illustrations helpful to your understanding of the chapter’s information? If yes, how so? If no, why not?
