  1. Modeling, Simulation and Gaming as a Catalyst to Thought Leadership in National Affairs Paul Hanover Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) CSU Modeling and Simulation Symposium 27 August 2008

  2. Three Observations • #1 - Every aspect of our lives is increasingly affected by technologies, policies and actions that are evolving more rapidly than we can individually account for, let alone manage. • Consider • Energy futures • Globalization of markets • Security imperatives SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  3. Observations • #2 - These dynamics are interconnected in both obvious and subtle ways, such that the potential for unintended consequences of any adjustment or ameliorative action is high. • Unintended consequences of selected national actions • Bio-fuel initiative’s impact on food supplies and costs • Loss of American production capacity in small electronics components (e.g., connectors, integrated circuits, capacitors, relays, LEDs, etc.) • US intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq has raised the national debt to $900 trillion, devalued the dollar, and raised the price of oil. SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  4. Observations • #3 – High-probability advances over the next twenty years, in all technologies of interest to us, will profoundly affect America’s future. • Near-term technology advances will: • Reduce our energy usage in virtually every aspect of our existence • Improve our health, health care, longevity, and quality of life • Support more robust and intuitive global communications (automated real-time translators, 3D visualization technology, shared knowledge tools [a la wikis]) SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  5. So . . . • Your Role • You will deliver the tools that will enable decision makers to understand and reckon with the interdependencies of political, economic and military dynamics and thereby “save the world.” You will develop: • More complete and comprehensive models • More portable, generalized and powerful simulation architectures • More intuitive and helpful human-computer interfaces. Life is more complex These complexities are interrelated Technologies are advancing at incredible speed SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  6. What Defines an M&S Professional? Education Specialization Application SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  7. Education • An M&S professional needs exposure to three academic disciplines. • Mathematics (statistics, calculus) • Computer science and engineering (to include the object-oriented software development paradigm) • Theoretical psychology (understanding of human ideation, cognitive skills and sensory perception/ response) SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  8. Specialization • Simulation • Integration • Operation • Data Collection • (Computer Eng) • Modeling • People • Operations • Things • (Software Dev) • Gaming • GUI Design • Virtual/ Constructive Interfaces • (Computer Sci) • The breadth of today’s M&S application domains requires skill concentration, based on a foundation of core knowledge. SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  9. Specialization • Simulation • Integration • Operation • Data Collection • (Computer Eng) • Modeling • People • Operations • Things • (Software Dev) • Modeling • People • Processes • Things • (Software Dev) • Gaming • GUI Design • Virtual/ Constructive Interfaces • (Computer Sci) • Modeling People • Stimuli and responses • Group behaviors • Modeling Operations • Command and control systems • Business/industry processes • Complex systems • Modeling Things • Weapons development • New energy-efficient technologies SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  10. Application • Medicine • Education • Industry • Product Development • Business Processes • Entertainment • Public Services • Defense • Environment • Security/Law Enforcement • Policy Development • Transportation SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  11. Wrapping Up Master change Know the territory Start small Keep a weather eye Credentials can open the door, an interview may get you in, but only achievement will keep you there . SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium

  12. Questions SAIC - CSU M&S Symposium
