  1. Wide Sargasso Sea Convent

  2. Physical characteristics: Antoinette at aunt Cora's house. Two younger kids try to attack her. ‘look at the crazy girl, crazy like her mother’. Antoinette gets accused of being mad they compare her with her mother, which is told to be crazy.

  3. ‘I will write my name in fire red’- Antoinette says this which shows her passion as in ‘red’ and ‘fire’ which is a important part of the book and it may foreshadow how Rochester changes her name and destroys her identity.

  4. Setting leads on to ‘a long empty street stretched away to the convent, the convent wall and a wooden gate’ this setting is described in detail it demonstrates the convent as a quite, boring place with so little to do, as it described by a young girl. Basically, it creates imagery describing the setting and her feelings. • She meet Alexander Cosway’s son in convent where she is bullied this doesn’t demonstrate positive things about convent. It could be a foreshadowing element to how life will last in convent.

  5. ‘Sometimes it was Helen's hair….sometimes it was the care miss Louise took off her beautiful teeth’ this physical descriptions reflect the attitude and state of mind of the reader and the characters personality. It could also be a example of the love Antoinette has for these characters ad from the way she describes it.

  6. ‘This convent was my refuge, a place of shine and of death’ this say represents the mood and tone of convent and how she feels about it. She believes she will live there until death and by saying it shines it shows us that at points convent is actually where she is happy. We could say it also represents love to how the character feels about the place.

  7. ‘The shadow of the tree was black’ this foreshadows what effects convent may have on Antoinette and that unpleasant things may happen in the future. There is no sign of red which in this story symbolises passion. • Antoinette's step father visits her in convent after some time.

  8. Dreams that she was in hell this shows her unhappiness in convent alone without her mother or her father.
