  2. Slaying those Grammar Demons: The Sentence in Academic Writing

  3. Upon finishing this workshop, you will be able to: • Understand how an Academic Sentence is built from the ground up. • Focus on building your knowledge of Parts of Speech. • Apply your knowledge English grammar to vary your sentence structures from simple to complex…and beyond!!!!!

  4. What is a NOUN…VERB?.... • SUBJECT…..PREDICATE?.... • (Understanding these, Leads to…) • What is an Independent Clause?... • What is a Dependent Clause?....

  5. What is a Subordinator?? The most common subordinators are: (Understanding these ideas, leads to…)

  6. THE SENTENCE • Now, that we have an understanding of what independent and dependent clauses are.... What is an ACADEMIC SENTENCE? Or better yet, what is it NOT?

  7. Let’s Put These concepts into Practice…

  8. Subject/Verb: Fresh Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. • 2 Subjects/Verb: Fresh water and sea water do not boil at the same temperature. • Subject/2 Verbs: Fresh Water freezes at zero degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius. • What other combinations can you think of?? Sentence Type #1: The Simple Sentence

  9. Sentence Type #2: The Compound Sentence • 1. Coordinator (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so: FAN BOYS) • Too much sun damages the skin, but many people do not use sunscreen • 2. Semicolon and Conjunctive Adverb (See Photocopy) • Too much sun damages the skin; therefore, we should remember to use plenty of sunscreen. • 3. Semicolon • Too much sun damages the skin; we should remember to use plenty of sun screen
