  3. Viral meningitis • Milder than bacterial • Usually clears on own within 2 weeks

  4. Causes • Nonpolio-enteroviruses cause 90% of viral meningitis • Arboviruses  accounts for 5%

  5. Enteroviruses • Second most common • Single positive stranded RNA

  6. Symptoms • Fever • Headache • Confusion • Seizures • Sleepiness • Stiff neck • Sensitivity to light • Lack of interest in eating or drinking • Skin rash

  7. Frequency • More than 10,000 cases annually • Underreported

  8. Transmittance • Fecal-oral route • Infected respiratory secretions

  9. Treatment • Pain medication for headaches • Rest • Fluids • Antiviral medication

  10. Risk • Drops with age • Most common in late summer early fall

  11. Precautions • MMR vaccine • Hand washing
