  4. What are the typical DSE work-related symptoms Early warning signs: • Any discomfort experienced whilst sitting at your computer • Numbness, tingling sensations in fingers, wrist, arms • Tightness in neck and shoulder – even lower back

  5. What are the typical DSE work-related symptoms • Non-specific arm pain – old RSI • Upper limb pain – carpel tunnel syndrome • Neck symptoms • Shoulder pain • Eye strain

  7. Risk Factors • Long periods of time spent in awkward or flexed positions • Repetition of movements • Heavy lifting, moving and handling • Suppressed feelings of pressure or frustration Not just the physical that could be the cause….Environmental, behavioural and/or organisation

  9. What can I do about it? • Rotate your tasks • Maintain a good posture • Get out of the office • Listen to your body • Microbreaks • Use self education tools – HSE, DWP & CSP websites

If self management fails……… Ongoing symptoms – seek professional help – line manager; HR dept, Occ Heath; case management Review all areas to determine cause: environment; organisational; behavioural Ergonomic considerations together with treatment is the most effective management tool Evidence: programmes using CBT has most effective in managing pain and increasing productivity X Resting – early activity and RTW
