Why should you listen to a speech on Economics? • Income inequality effects you. • Income inequality in the world has been rising for the past 30 years – and in places you might not expect • Why should you listen to me? • I’m a news junkie and a data nerd. • I love to get my hands on some data and see where it leads. • I will provide reputable sources for my data.

  4. What is income inequality? • “Income inequality is the extent of disparity between high income and low income households.” $ $ Few people with lots of money AND Lots of people with little money

  5. What is income Equality? • Income equality is a more even distribution of wealth. There are still rich and poor, but the disparity is not as great. Very Rich Very Poor

Income Inequality and the GINI Index • According to the World Factbook, GINI is “An index that measures the degree of inequality in the distribution of family income in a country.” • A GINI index of 0 would mean complete income equality.   7. High GINI Index • A high GINI index means: • Uneven income distribution • FEW people with lots of money • Income INequality LOTS OF MONEY! $

  8. LOW GINI Index • A low GINI index indicates a more even distribution of wealth. Very Rich Very Poor

  9. Who tracks Income Inequality? • Both the CIA and the UN • Why? • Income inequality leads to social instability. • Too many people without the essentials, and uprisings occur.
