  1. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8-qGZ-Bc-U • Born near Mexico City, Sor Juana was one of the greatest intellectuals of her time. She wrote poetry essays, music and plays. She also defended a woman's right to education at a time when few woman had access to it. At 19, she entered a convent and over the years built a library of several thousand books. SorJuana’s living quarters became a meeting place for other writers and intellectuals, who were drawn to her because of her intelligence and knowledge.
