  2. WELCOME TO THE FAM TOUR! We are thrilled that you will be joining us for CIEE’s 2017 Northeast School Familiarization (FAM) tour! Our team has put together a fabulous tour this year, beginning in Boston and ending up in historic Philadelphia, with many exciting activities planned along the way. During the tour, you will be visiting eleven of our prestigious partner schools, which represent a diverse mix of options to accommodate the different needs and interests of your students. You will also have the opportunity to meet with CIEE students, host families, and local coordinators in different communities along the route to provide you with first-hand feedback about the school and hosting experience, which you can use in your consultations with prospective students and parents. BOSTON TRINITY ACADEMY SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • A relatively small Christian private school of 240 students, Boston Trinity has one of the most diverse student bodies both locally and nationally. The curriculum offers an extensive array of Honors and AP courses and boasts a 78% average of students scoring a 3 or higher on their AP exams. All graduating seniors complete a Summer Capstone experience, providing students with a unique, personal experience to reflect upon for their Senior Synthesis and Symposium project. Of the previous senior class, 99% of students were accepted to a 4-year college or university. • LOCATION • Boston Trinity Academy is located in downtown Boston, MA. Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and home to many elite colleges and universities.   7. MARIAN HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • Marian is a small private Catholic school in Metro-West Boston that has extensive academic and extracurricular offerings. They offer over 21 varsity sports, four foreign languages and 25 AP courses. They also offer a variety of extracurriculars ranging from Key Club, Mock Trial, Multi-Cultural Club, and Math League. Marian is a great school for students who wish to be challenged academically in a positive, close-knit environment. In the last graduating class, 98% of students were accepted to a 4-year college or university • LOCATION • Marian High School is located in downtown Framingham, Massachusetts. Located under 30 minutes from Boston, Framingham is on a commuter rail line of the MBTA. The train station is walking distance from Marian High School. The population is roughly 68,000 making it the 14th most populous city in Massachusetts. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • The Natick Collection mall features high-end stores such as Burberry, Zara, and Gucci and restaurants such as The California Pizza Kitchen, The Cheesecake Factory and PF Chang’s. Framingham has several places to spend time with friends including Callahan State Park and the AMC Movie theater.   9. HOPKINTON HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • Hopkinton is a US News and World Report Gold Medal School that is ranked the 5th best high school in Massachusetts. Their facilities are brand new and students get a truly collegiate experience. Hopkinton offers a variety of AP courses and over 82% of the student population is enrolled in AP classes, making it a strong choice for academic achievement. Hopkinton is dedicated to making international students feel welcome and engaged, and they host an international week annually to showcase the value of international exchange. • LOCATION • Hopkinton is located within an hour of Boston, and the town is home to the starting line of the world famous Boston Marathon. Hopkinton is a quintessential New England town with a strong community feel, and classic New England history. The MBTA Commuter Rail station is 4 miles from Hopkinton High School, making it easy for students to travel to and from Boston. • a • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • Hopkinton’s town center is a walkable distance from the school.   12. SAINT RAPHAEL’S ACADEMY SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • Saint Raphael’s Academy is a co-ed Catholic school, offering a close-knit community spread across a 7-building campus. The school offers more than 12 clubs and over 20 AP courses. They are strong in the arts and are well known for their theater group. Saint Raphael’s offers a number of sports and extracurriculars, including football, basketball, soccer, chess club, honor society, mock trial, and multicultural club to name a few. • LOCATION • Saint Raphael’s is located in beautiful Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Pawtucket is just 5 minutes from Providence, a city of over 170,000 people and home to a popular food and art scene. Providence is easily accessible via public transportation, making it easy for students to travel back and forth from Pawtucket. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • Providence is a vibrant city that attracts young people from around the country. There are a number of colleges downtown, most notably Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The Providence Place Mall features stores such as Nordstrom’s, H&M, and COACH. The Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence hosts a number of major concerts and other cultural events.   14. KILLINGLY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • Killingly High School, located in northeast Connecticut, completed new state of the art facilities in 2010. Although Killingly is a large public high school, the student to teacher ratio is 12:1 to provide students with the support they need to succeed. Over 80% of the faculty at Killingly have advanced degrees and the school has a wide array of extracurriculars, 10 AP courses, and unique academic offerings through the University of Connecticut Cooperative Program, where students are able to earn college credit prior to graduating high school. Killingly also has a range of sports teamsand a variety of clubs. • a • LOCATION • Killingly, a community located in the northeast corner of Connecticut, is a historic town, built around several small mill villages which continue to be active community centers. The town is about 30 minutes from Providence, RI and an hour to downtown Hartford. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • Killingly is home to several parks for students to spend time with friends outdoors featuring walking trails, tennis courts, and a skate park. The town recreation department organizes several sports leagues, festivals, and trips to large cities. It also has a small downtown, with local shops and a true New England feel. CONNECTICUT IB ACADEMY SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • The Connecticut IB Academy (CIBA) was named the #1 school in Connecticut by US News and World Report and is #40 school in the top 100 high school rankings. It is also ranked as a US News and World Report Gold Medal school. CIBA is a charter school where students can earn an IB diploma or a standard high school diploma. They have a strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In addition to their academic reputation, CIBA offers students a wide variety of more than 12 extracurriculars, including specialized art courses and competitive athletics. • LOCATION • Connecticut IB Academy is located close to Connecticut’s capital city, Hartford, which has a population of 120,000 people. East Hartford offers beautiful riverfront parks for students to spend time in. From downtown Hartford, students can catch a direct train to New York City and explore the area using public transportation. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • The nearby University of Connecticut offers many cultural, academic, and sporting events for students to enjoy.   19. THE HUDSON SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • The Hudson School is ranked in the top ten best independent schools in New Jersey. The school offers over 150 courses and a surprising number of AP courses for its small class sizes. Students are required to participate in community service activities that are structured into the curriculum as well as additional service projects outside of school. A number of afterschool activities are offered, including Mandarin lessons, athletics, and creative arts. • LOCATION • Hoboken, New Jersey is right across the river from Manhattan but is an exciting city in it’s own right. It has a population of over 50,000 and continually attracts young people. Students can get around town on the public busses or take the PATH train into New York City. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • Hoboken has an abundance of shops, restaurants, and galleries for students to appreciate as well as beautiful riverfront parks. Just across the river, New York City offers endless sources of activity, from concerts at the Madison Square Garden to world-class museums like the Met and Guggenheim. Students are offered a wide variety of academics providing them with a curriculum tailored for individual differences, including 16 AP courses and a full Honors curriculum. The school also has 23 varsity sports teams and over 30 extracurricular activities, giving students a large variety of after school activities to choose from. DePaul provides personalized academic support to prepare students for college, with mandatory SAT Prep classes and individual assigned faculty advisors for each student. • LOCATION • Wayne, New Jersey is a city of over 50,000 people less than 20 miles from New York City.   26. BISHOP MCDEVITT HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • Bishop McDevitt is a co-ed Catholic high school, built on a 83 acre campus. Classes are kept small, with under 20 students per class. The academic curriculum offers six levels of difficulty, including Honors, AP courses and Virtual High School courses, allowing students to tailor their experience. Ample support opportunities available, like the Writing Lab and personalized college admissions counseling. In addition, the school offers over 30 clubs and 15 athletic teams for students to join. • LOCATION • Bishop McDevitt High School is located in Wyncote, Cheltenham Township, a beautiful and quiet setting that provides a safe environment for learning yet is just 13 miles from downtown Philadelphia. Philadelphia magazine listed it as one of 25 best places to live. The town has great recreational facilities and a diverse population. Students can easily go to and from Philadelphia on the SEPTA transportation system. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • Wyncote holds frequent block parties and community events for its citizens. Bishop McDevitt is only a few blocks from the downtown area with shops and restaurants. CAMDEN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL SNAPSHOT • ACADEMICS • The oldest Catholic High School in southern New Jersey, Camden Catholic High School offers an incredible range of courses, athletic offerings, and extracurriculars. There are 11 AP courses and dual college-credit programs available to students through Virtual High School, as well as 26 honors courses. There are over 20 sports teams at CCHS, and they are also known for their esteemed Arts Academy, dedicated to the performing, digital, and fine arts. • LOCATION • Ranked as one of the best places to live in America by Money magazine, Cherry Hill is an affluent town with a population of over 70,000 people. The town is only a few miles from downtown Philadelphia and students can easily get into town using the PATCO train. Every spring the town’s namesake cherry trees bloom creating a beautiful landscape. • SHOPPING, DINING, AND ENTERTAINMENT • The Cherry Hill Mall is a premier shopping and dining destination in the Philadelphia area. Several parks are located around the city for students to spend time outdoors. Philadelphia is very close by and offers rich history and culture for students to absorb, including internationally recognized attractions like Independence Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
