Selecting a Topic • Decide upon the topic for which you need information • Avoid being too broad or too narrow • Conduct preliminary research to ensure you are able to find enough information on your topic • Visit some of the websites listed on the guide “Using Internet Sources to Select a Topic” • The library has several books that suggest topics for research papers: • 10,000 Ideas for Term Papers, Projects, Reports and Speeches • Research Topic Guides for Students • 100 More Research Topic Guides for Students

  2. Accessing Scholarly Resources Electronically • Use a research database! They contain articles originally published in magazines, journals, and newspapers, as well as entries from almanacs, reference books, and more. • More scholarly and trustworthy than the Internet (websites) • Go to the library website, www.hgtc.edu/library and click Find Articles • Once the research databases page loads, scroll down and click on the underlined name to one of the resources that covers controversial/social issues
