July 2012 : UNSG convened a High-Level Panel to advise him on a bold and practical development agenda beyond 2015. 27 Eminent Persons, 3 cochairs : President Yudhoyono (Indonesia), President Sirleaf (Liberia), and Prime Minister Cameron (United Kingdom). May 30, 2013 : report submission. Overall objective : ending extreme poverty through sustainable development within one generation. Special Event on MDGs/Post-2015, September 25, 2013 : UNSG’s report submitted to the General Assembly strongly reflects the HLP’s vision and ambition. Background

  4. 8 billion by 2030 - 9 by 2050 :more urban, middle class, interdependent, vulnerable, constrained in resources, older. Half the world’s poor live in conflict-affected countries that need capable and responsive institutions. Carbon emissions must be reduced below today’s voluntary pledges to avoid a 4-degree Celsius scenario. Natural disasters cost since 2000 : $2.5 trillion. Environmental assets are under threat BUT growth, technologies and scaling up proven solutions offer huge opportunities for sustainable development Business-as-usual is not an option

Reaching everyone : a radical commitment to equality and non-discrimination Equality of opportunity at the heart of post-2015 : indicators should be disaggregated and tracked with respect to income (especially for the bottom 20%), gender, location, age, people living with disabilities, and relevant social group Targets will only be considered ‘achieved’ if they are met for all relevant income and social groups 1. A global approach to food security 14 • All our main challenges impact food security & its 4 pillars : • demographic pressure : about 50% more food needed by 2030 • urbanisation • Inequalities : 70% poor people are in rural areas, women first victims while they are account for 60 to 80% of farmers • climate change, increase frequency of natural disasters • biodiversity and environmental degradation, fish stocks reduction • financial instability (commodity price volatility)… • Universal challenge : obesity killing three times as many as malnutrition, The Lancet, Dec. 2012 • Food security impact all the other goals : poverty, health, gender… • Global approach for both a dedicated goal focus on outcome and mainstreaming this challenges. ex : nexus food security, water, energy
