Planning Framework

  • Purpose and Objectives

  • The project seeks to review and assess the diversity, distribution and provision of sports infrastructure

  • in public open space across the Shire.

  • Development of a Shire Strategic Sports Plan will attempt to foster a coordinated approach and shared vision for sport development and provision within the Shire, thereby maximising potential for funding programs and grant opportunities.

  • Other key objectives proposed;

  • To engage the relevant stakeholders in the process,

  • To integrate the outcomes of the project into Council 10 year financial plan and asset management framework.

  • To provide the various Sporting Groups a basis for future development of facilities,

  • To identify needs for potential developments,

  • To develop a series of achievable and sustainable recommendations, and

  • To prioritise and quantify proposed developments, including indicative costs.

Phase Three – Review Existing Provision

Review of ground allocation practices

Review of current maintenance and renovation practices

Review of playing field assessment procedure

Review of works prioritisation procedure

Part 2 of the project (assessing field condition in July and providing amendment works)

To be completed in July using the modified site assessment sheet

Survey of the soil, drainage and other information at each field completed

Maps of every site showing locations where soil is too shallow, sandy, waterlogged, and this information will be presented along with the site usage data and July playing field condition data into a single mini report for each site – August meeting.

Phase Four - Determining Future Demand - Some Current Concepts

  • Current Development Concepts

  • Greenhills playing fields

  • Ten new fields – including 2 Synthetic Hockey

  • 1 Baseball – 7 green spaces Aussie Rules/Soccer/League Union.

  • With some relocation spare capacity will be achieved at

  • Jenola– 2/3 fields

  • Gwawley Fields – 2/3 fields

  • Tonkin Oval – new winter allocation??

  • Sylvania Height School – one new field

  • Cronulla High School – two new fields 

  • Boys Town – Council under lease to manage this facility

  • Archery – initial discussions for local facility

  • AFL relocate Seniors off Gwawley to Waratah and Juniors to Greenhills

  • Sutherland Men’s Hockey seeking second synthetic at Garnet Road Sylvania Hts

  • Sharks soccer second synthetic pitch Seymour Shaw

  • Shire Netball seeking major expansion 30-40 new netball courts

  • Model Aero Club – potential relocation due to residential expansion

  • SSJFA – Synthetic pitch Bates Drive complex

  • Cronulla Sharks – relocation of Cron/Caringbah Rugby League club off Endeavour to Cronulla High
