  2. Thechildhood Karol Józef Wojtyła was born 18th May 1920 in Wadowice. His parents were Karol and Emilia Wojtyła. Emilia Wojtyła with little Karol Karol Wojtyła (Senior)

  3. Karol Wojtyła had an olderbrother Edmund. He alsohad an oldersister, Olga, whodied16 hoursafterherbirth. Edmund- Karol's brother.

  4. Karol Wojtyła's godparents were: Józef Kuczmierczyk (mother's brother-in-law) and Maria Wiadrowska (mother's sister) Maria Wiadrowska with children

  7. The future pope at school Six years later on the 15th September Karol Wojtyła first went to school for boys only. He started being called „Lolek”. The name stayed and he was sometimes called „Lolek”, even after becoming the pope!

  9. 13thApril 1929 after a shortdisorderdied his mother- Emilia. Karol was then 9 years old. Her body was latertaken to an armycemeteryin Kraków wherenowissituatedtheWojtyła'sfamily grave. The family grave

  10. A month later, after Karol's mother died, he was celebrating his first communion on the 25th May 1929 in the same church he was baptized in. Young Wojtyła on his First Communion day.

  12. Karol'sfatherused to help him a lot with his school. His gradeswerealwaysverygood (hegotonlyA's). After a schoolyearin 1932 Wojtyła went on a pilgrimagewith his father to Jasna Góra

  14. Unfortunately, soon Karol Wojtyła had to face the death in his family again. This time on the 9th December died his brother Edmund. He died because of the epidemic of scarlet fever. Edmund was a doctor. Little Edmund Wojtyła with his parents

  16. Karol Wojtyła was also a poet. He used to play inthetheatre and for school. In 1937 Karol started learning inthelastclass. He took part in a recitingcompetition, whichhewon togetherwith Halina Królikiewsz(later a famousactress Halina Kwiatkowska). Before becoming a pope Karol Wojtyła with his friends Danuta Pukło-Gruszczyńska and Halina Królikiewicz- Kwiatkowska duringa play.

  17. Karol Wojtyła loved not only travelling and acting, but alsopoetry. Before and afterbecoming a popehehadwritten many books and poems. A book of John Paul II. - Memory and identity

  18. After school Karol started studying theology at a University. He stopped playing in the theatre. Later he became a priest. Priest Karol Wojtyła.

  19. Before he became a priest, his studies were interrupted by the II-nd world war. He had to work then in a quarry. Karol resting at work.

  20. As a priest he was spending lots of time with the teenagers, he loved them. The best time for him and the teenagers was the time when they were going on trips. Karol Wojtyła on one of his trips

  23. After John Paul the First pope'sdeath, Karol Wojtyła hasbecame a newpope. He was chosen on the 16thOctober 1978. He was the first Polishpopeinthehistory.

  25. John Paul travelleda lot. He visited many countries to show to peopleChristianity and to bringthemcloser to God.

  26. 13th May inRomewas theday of theassassination on John Paul's life. Pope was shotinhis hand and stomach. He spent a long time inhospital. He neverrecovered. Thepopeeasilyforgave his assasin. The assassination

  29. Disorder and death John Paul theII-ndsufferedfromParkinson'sdisease. He startedfeelingworse and worse. He had to have an operation Thepopedied on the 2ndApril 2005 at 9:37 pm.

  31. ThePolishpopewas beatified on 1st May 2011. To pray for theblessedpopecameaboutmillionpeople, including many Poles. Presidents of many countriesalsocamethen to Vatican City. The Mass was chaired by a newpope- Benedict XVI.
