  2. NSF: Scope of Registration ISO 14001: Facilities, experiments, and operations managed by Brookhaven Science Associates at Brookhaven National Laboratory in accordance with the Environmental Management System OHSAS 18001: Health, safety risks associated with Brookhaven National Laboratory operations in Upton, New York

  3. NSF: Audit Results • One minor nonconformance • One opportunity for improvement • Eight positive practices

  4. Minor Nonconformance • ELEMENT 4.3.1. Aspects for the NASA SRL were misidentified or omitted • Improve the SBMS by clarifying that the “core” environmental aspect category of waste generation includes solid wastes such as cardboard, recyclables, food waste, trash, etc. Opportunity for Improvement

  5. Positive Practices • CAD use of the EMS Process Assessment is exemplary • F&O pilot initiative to consolidate paperwork for job safety analysis is good • F&O Complex plan-of-the-day meeting is good use of time • BNL’s “I helped with safety” video spots are excellent where management acted proactively to implement an employee’s idea for improvement • The BNL Training Management System (BTMS) is an exceptionally effective tool for managing training records • BNL’s Safety and Health Services Division is transitioning from the use of lagging indicators to leading indicators to assess performance • The ergonomics program incorporates an equipment “try out” area into the evaluation of solutions process • There is effective use of the causal analysis and corrective action process

  6. Audit Team Recommendation • BNL is recommended for continued certification to ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 with one minor nonconformance

  7. Accelerator Safety Envelopes • New versions recently approved by DOE BHSO for • ASE for AGS, Booster, Linac and EBIS • ASE for BLIP and RRPL • ASE for ERL • ASE for NSRL • ASE for RHIC • ASE for TVDG and TTB • New ASEs are simpler • Classroom training and required reading start during summer shutdown

  8. Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should Category Photo: “tow truck” observed in Utah
