Dividing integers. Rule #1: The rules for assigning signs to a quotient of two integers are based on the rules for products. The quotient of two positives or two negatives is a positive 12 / 2 = 6 -12 / -2 = 6 The quotient of a positive and a negative is a negative 10 / -5 = -2 -10 / 5 = -2.

  3. Rule #2: Division of integers can be modelled using a sharing, grouping, or inverse multiplication Sharing • -10 / 2 = ? • -10 counters shared between 2 people = -5 each

  4. Grouping • -10 / -2 = ? • How many jumps of -2 does it take to get to -10? 5

  5. Inverse Multiplication • -10 / 2 • ? X 2 = -10 • ? = -5

  6.
