  1. Remembering Safety this Holiday Season Departmental Safety Representative Staff Training December 2011

  2. Many programs at HCA enjoy various festivities during the holidays…. Keep in mind that this is also one of the most accident prone times of the year. Let’s look at some tips to help ensure this time remains safe and enjoyable.

  3. Candles There is no denying the holidays are one of the most fragrant times of the year. However using fire in any manner, for example lighting candles or incense, at any HCA location is prohibited!

  4. Decorations Although many of us here at HCA love to decorate for this special occasion we often find ways of displaying decorations that are not always safe….Let’s look at three common safety hazards that are related to decorating for the holidays.

  5. Hanging Decorations Lights…Wreaths…Glitter…and a Toy…but how do we put it up safely for all to enjoy? One of the safest ways to put up any type of decoration is to utilize a step stool or ladder. Never use a chair or a desk!!

  6. Extension Cords There are many types of decorations some big and some small but the biggest question is how to light them all? The safest way to display and light decorations is to use the outlets in the wall. Do not use extension cords in your areas because extension cords have the potential to become major tripping hazards.

  7. Cracked or Frayed Wires Ooooh…Ahhhh…look at that lighted choir…wait just a second I think I see fire!! It is important to always check decorations for cracked or frayed wires and make sure they are UL certified so lights do not get too hot when plugged in.

  8. Potlucks Pass the egg nog and the pumpkin pie. As we gather to enjoy all the goodies this holiday season remember that heating sources such as griddles, fryers, and pot warmers need to be utilized in areas like kitchens and break rooms not in offices or cubicles.
