3. HOW long does it taketo attain the Proficient Level? To attain the Proficient Level, students should participate in 3 to 5 years of continuous, sequential proficiency-oriented language instruction. To attain the Distinguished Level , students should participate in a minimum of 5 to 7 years of continuous, sequential proficiency-oriented language instruction. There are several factors that affect the rate at which an individual student will attain these levels: the age, motivation, and ability level of the student. the amount of time and effort put forth by the student to study, practice, and actually use the language. the amount of instruction over a period of time (without skipping semesters or years). the nature and quality of the instruction. the level of support beyond the classroom of parents and guardians.
4. WHAT students should do: Participate actively in small and large group oral language practice. Study, practice, and learn new words and phrases with other students in your language. Use what you have learned to communicate with your teacher and classmates orally and in writing (journals, texts, email, etc.).
5. WHAT the teacher should do: Provide frequent opportunities for students to hear and communicate in the second language. Infuse authentic cultural information into second language instruction. Teach and assess vocabulary, grammar, and skills in meaningful and relevant ways.

WHAT the parents/guardians should do: Make sure your child is in a sequential language program for at least 3 to 5 years to attain the Proficient Level and 4 to 7 years to attain the Distinguished Level. Encourage your child to progress to higher levels of oral proficiency. Do not allow your child to fall behind. Be sure they are practicing daily.

Student goals (I can…) for Proficient Level Building upon the Novice Level topics, students must create original sentences, ask questions, give directions, and provide simple descriptions related to the following topics: Greet adults and friends and ask how they are. State name, age and birthday. Ask about someone else. Tell about someone else. Tell where you go to school, your grade, tell where you live, address, your phone number. Ask about your friend(s). Describe yourself –what you look like, your personality, state your nationality, your daily routine. State your favorite foods and those you do not like. State your favorite activities, hobbies, sports, pets, possessions and those you do not like. Ask a classmate what he/she likes. Describe your favorite activities in school and after school (time, place, with whom, when, etc.). Name ten family members. Give the names, age of family members and state their relationship to you. Ask about your friend’s family.
