Cohorts • Cohort 1 completed the course Summer 2005 and have completed 2 years of Link Meetings. • Cohort 2 completed the course Summer 2006 and have completed a year of Link Meetings. • Cohort 3 have completed the course and receive their certificates today. They now become link personnel and will attend termly Link Meetings. • Cohort 4 are here for the briefing and begin the course in September. They are the final cohort. • The course will run again , possibly not every year, for schools to send further applicants to allow for staff leaving.

  4. Project Team Aims • Provide each school with identified personnel to whom others can refer for advice. (CoP) • Promote good practice in area of speech and language development and SLCN. • Encourage early identification and prevention of SLCN. • Promote collaborative practice. • Promote continuity of service across and between schools, key stages, professions and agencies.

  9. Foundation Level: Aim To raise awareness of typical and atypical language development and the challenges faced by those pupils who do not acquire language as expected. 6

  10. Foundation Level:Objectives • Develop an awareness of the educational challenges posed by children with speech, language and communication difficulties (SLCD). • Develop an awareness of strategies that can be implemented with children with SLCD. 7

  11. Objectives: • Work collaboratively with other professionals. • Develop an awareness of how SLCD affect children within the classroom (learning and social) environment. • Increase understanding of ways to maximise the learning potential for children with SLCD. 8

Course Dates • Unit 1 Wednesday 26th September 12.30 – 3.30 • Unit 2 Wednesday 21st November 12.30 – 3.30 • Unit 3 Wednesday 23rd January 12.30-3.30 • Unit 4 Wednesday 12th March 12.30-3.30 • Unit 5 Wednesday 23rd April 12.30-3.30 • Unit 6 Wednesday 18th June 12.30-3.30 All sessions 12.30 – 3.30 • Presentation Tuesday 1st July 4.00 – 5.30

  13. Course requirements • 6 half day sessions, one per half-term (funding) • Preparation for each unit • Homework and evaluation following each unit • Dissemination to whole school (or department- secondary) • Development and implementation of development plan for SLCN

  14. Preparation for unit 1 • Roles identified for course members • Starting point for your school stating where the school is at and outlining their expectations from the course.

  15. Preparation for unit 1 • Key Staff - Record of other key staff in the school and their responsibilities as they relate to SLCN. (Secondary decide which area/subject the plan will apply to.) • Feedback of this Briefing -Informing whole school staff (or department for secondary) of the course and its intentions. Ensure they are aware of the identified personnel and how to access them.

  17. Awards • School receives a B & D certificate to say they have participated and have link personnel in place. Participants receive: • a B & D certificate and their name on the link personnel list. • A JPDF foundation stage certificate (ICAN) • An accreditation certificate (Cambridge University)

  18. Accreditation certificate is dependant on 95% attendance. • Preparation and post course work will need to be kept up to date as it is cumulative throughout the course. • ICAN certificate is dependant on 100% attendance.

  19. Continuation • Successful course participants will become Links for S&L for their school. • Follow up termly meetings for identified personnel for advice, support and sharing of experiences, expertise, problems, etc. • Possibility of further accreditation from Link work.

  20. Link Meetings • Termly 2 hour sessions with funding available for supply cover. • Continued training on specific issues. • Updates on new research, government guidelines, etc. • Sharing of experiences. • Guidance, advice and support for implementation of targets. • Newsletter. • See stands and displays.

  21. Link Accredited course • 2 years • Completed individually • First half of the course is covered by link meetings • Second half of the course comprises impact of special interest courses run by SLN team • 8 participants • Completes one section of the University points system
