JPI Water Partneship Water is facing challenges as never before • Demand for water grows faster than growth of world population • 1/3 of the world population will not have access to clean drinking water • With the best practical means of today there is an investment required of about €150 billion to provide the world of clean water • More than 80% of the world population has not any form of proper sanitation • Only 10% of the waste water is treated before it is drained to surface water

JPI Water Partnership 12 JANUARY 2010: Stake holder meeting • The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. • The representative of the Basque Country (supported through a phone call) • The Cyprus Institute (CyI), The Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (Letter of support) • The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affaires • The Academy of Finland • Foundation Madri+d • The permanent Representative of Hungary to the European Union • The Italian Center of Ispra. • The Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research • The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey • The Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation • The European Technological Platform for Water Supply and Sanitation

JPI Water Partnership Results Stake holder meeting I • Revision of existing draft using JPI (EC) template • A core group for preparing the new draft proposal, (Austria, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania and Spain). • The editing of the proposal is based on the existing proposal, the comments of the European Commission and the SRA of the WSSTP • To focus the proposal on the challenges in the following areas: Drinking water, process water, waste water, interactions with natural systems and non technological issues such as social, political and economical issues.

JPI Water Partnership Results Stake holder meeting II • Important will be to identify gaps in the partners research programs • Negociate with ERA-NET Water in order to reach an agreement and to incorporate ERA-NET partners in gobernance structure • If no agreement were reached, in order to avoid overlapings, remove everything related to Water Basins Management

JPI Water Partnership Strengthening European Initiatives • To use the scarce R&D resources and managing available funds in the more efficient and effective way. • To move common challenges in the direction of common research agendas (WSSTP, EWP) • More coherence in the European research and development in water technology is needed • Create an European level playing field. • Setting clear and realistic targets and deliverables to achieve • major breakthrough. • *Achieving tangible societal impact
