Collecting data/ tally charts. Frequency tables, sometimes called tally charts, are used to collect, sort and/or display data. E.g. Put the following data into a tally chart: 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 5, 4, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 4, 5, 5.

Put the following data into a tally chart: 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 5, 4, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 4, 5, 5 Students must remember that when 5 is reached a diagonal line is put through the tally marks. 6 8 7 6 The frequency is just the total of the tally marks 4

  3. When the data range is over a large area, for example 1 – 50, it is impractical to list each number in a frequency diagram. By grouping data, frequency tables order and help to interpret data.

  4. Or for continuous data, students may use inequality signs
