  1. The Logical Structures in Pāli Gāthā by TetsuoHASHIMOTO

  2. The Source or the Text All the gāthās of these---- • Suttanipāta(Sn.) • Saṃyutta-Nikāya(SN.) vol.1 • Theragāthā(Thag.), Therīgāthā(Thig.) • Dhammapada(Dhp.) • Itivuttaka(Itiv.) • Udāna “ Thesaurus of the Pāli Gāthā” . When I write ‘the text’, it means this file. About the details, see the APPENDICES and my HP, http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~pali-bud

  3. The four types of ‘structure’-1.‘paṭicca-causality-structure’(type A) Type A : with paṭicca • (A-1) hetu(s.) –paṭicca – khandha,etc.(pl.) –sambhūta • (A-2) piya(s.) –paṭicca – dukkha,etc.(pl.) – bhavanti • (A-3) upadhi,etc –paṭicca – phassa(pl.) –phusanti • (A-4) upadhi(pl.) –paṭicca – dukkha(s.) –sambhoti • (A-5) hetu* –paṭicca – bimba,etc.(s.) –sambhūta • (a-1) On account of a cause the elements of existence have come to be. • (a-2) On account of the pleasant the misery exist. • (a-3) On account of upadhi, the contacts of sensation affect. • (a-4) On account of upadhi(pl.passions?) the misery arise. • (a-5) On account of causes bimba(a human body) has come to be.

  4. The four types of ‘structure’-2‘paccaya-causality-structure’(type B) • Type B : with paccaya • (B-1) āhāra,etc. – paccayā – dukkha – sambhoti • (B-2) upādāna – paccayā – bhava(dukkha) – (sambhoti) • (b-1) Because of nutriments the misery arises. • (b-2)Existence is because of grasping….That is the arising of misery (Norman)

  5. The four types of ‘structure’-3‘nidāna-causality-structure’ (type C) • Type C : with nidāna • (C-1) upadhi – nidāna – dukkha(pl.) – pabhavanti • (C-2) ito – nidāna –rāga,dosa –(pahoti) • (C-3) icchā – nidāna – pariggaha,etc. – (pahoti) • (C-4) piya(abl.) –(nidāna) –kalaha,etc.– pahūta • (c-1) From the source of upadhi miseries rise. • (c-2) From this source lust and hatred rise. • (c-3) From the source of desire property,etc. rise. • (c-4) From a friend quarrels,etc. rise.

  6. The four types of ‘structure’-4‘jāyati-causality-structure’,(type D) • Type D : with jāyati • (D-1) taṇhā,etc.(abl.) – (none) – soka & bhaya –jāyati • From taṇhā sorrow and fear are born.

  7. Two Models of Causality 1 2

  8. 1.Seed-growing-model-1 Nayidam attakataṃ bimbaṃ // na yidaṃ parakatam aghaṃ // hetuṃ paṭicca sambhūtaṃ // hetubhaṅgā nirujjhati // //Yathā aññataraṃ bījaṃ // khette vuttaṃ virūhati //pathavīrasañ cāgamma // sinehañ ca tad ubhayaṃ // (SN.vol.1,p.134,G)

  9. 1.Seed-growing-model-2 • <transl.>This bimba is not produced from itself. Nor is this (like) a sadness produced from other. On account of a cause this has come to be. With the cause’s extinction it will cease. As when a seed is sown in the field, it grows out thanks to the two: the nutriment of the soil and the sap (of seed)

  10. 2.Aerial-roots-growing-model-1 Rāgo ca doso ca itonidānā // aratī ratī lomahaṃso itojā // itosamuṭṭhāya manovitakkā // kumārakā vaṃkam iv-ossajanti // // Snehajā attasambhūtā // nigrodhasseva khandhajā // (SN.vol.1,p.207;Sn.271-272)

  11. 2.Aerial-roots-growing-model-2 • <transl.> " Passion and hatred have their origin inthis. Aversion and delight and excitement are born from this. Thoughts of mind rise from this, and......(omitted).......... (They are) born from the lust or the sap (of itself), arisen from iteself, like the trunk-born (aerial-roots) of the banyan tree.

  12. admit / deny ○ attakata only sineha parakata only pathavī-rasa hetuṃ paṭicca sambhūta

  13. admit / deny • Roots of banyan are born from the lust or the sap (of itself),arisen from iteself. (Snehajāattasambhūtā) • =attakata in Seed-growing-model ‘Aerial-roots-growing-model’ is denied

  14. Aerial-roots-growing-model’ is denied • So, itonidānā,itojā, ito samuṭṭhāyashould be denied. • Then, ‘nidāna-causality-structure’(type C) and‘jāyati-causality-structure’,(type D)should be denied.

  15. Why ?

  16. Because “ Multi-origin and single effect” is admitted. ‘Sambhavati’ is admitted. “ Single origin and multi-effect” is denied. ‘Pabhavati’ is denied.

  17. TRUE STRUCTURE 1(type A)with paṭicca “ multi-origin and single effect”. + ‘sambhavati’ • (A-4) “ upadhi(pl.) -- paṭicca – dukkha(s.) -- sambhoti”[i] • (A-5) “ hetu(s.[ii]) -- paṭicca – bimba(s.) -- sambhūta” [iii][i] Udāna,p.33. I corrected ‘na upadhī’ to ‘upadhī’ according to CPD. and comm. • [ii] ‘Hetu’ of this structure should mean plural because the origin or source are plural in the following simile. • [iii] SN.vol.1,p.134.

  18. TRUE STRUCTURE 2(type B)“ multi-origin and single effect”. + ‘sambhavati’with paccaya

  19. How can ‘dukkha(pain, misery)’ arise becaus of ‘food’ or ‘effort’ etc. ? This gāthā is a good hint---- upādānapaccayā bhavo, bhūto dukkhaṃ nigacchati, jātassa maraṇam hoti, eso dukkhassa sambhavo. (Sn.742) <trnasl.> Existence is because of grasping. An (existent) being goes to misery. (There is) death for one who is born. That is the arising of misery. (K.R.Norman)

  20. The illustration-1 • It is said that ‘bhava’ arises because of upādāna. But the place or matter from which ‘bhava’ arises is not described here. So we put it in order to understand the system. • The place can be a ‘Black-Box’ which looks like a function.

  21. The illustration-2 • ‘Bhava’ means ‘living being’ which arises in this way, and is involved in ‘saṃsāra’. • ‘saṃsāra’ means dukkha.

  22. We can’t see ‘Black box’ and ‘bhava’They are concealed in the type B. Upādāna(n. fuel, grasping, clinging to existence ) is the representative of saṃkhāra, viññāṇa,ārambha,āhāra, iñjita. f(x) = sineha ( taṇhā)

  23. It looks like ‘seed model’ hetuṃ paṭicca sambhūtā

  24. Conclusion • In the pāli texts, there are a lot of structures of causality. I chose some from the old gāthās. Among them only the structure of “multi-origin and single effect” with ‘sambhavati’ shows the true causality. Its model is ‘seed-growing-model’.
