  5. How businesses can be seen to operate in enterprising ways To stand out from competition and attract customers, businesses try to be different. This can be done by taking risks or being innovative. A business might have: • Innovative products e.g. Dyson but high costs made this high risk • Innovative working practices e.g. internet site which is 24/7 Or it might look at how it is run. Changing from a partnership to a Ltd might enable it to expand and increase profits whilst reducing risks for investors. Retaining excellent employees is vital to the success of any business. It might try flexible working (flexi-time, work from home) to keep staff.

Task: How businesses can be seen to operate in enterprising ways With shoulder partner: • Think of a business that has innovative products • Think of a business that has innovative working practices • Write both examples in your exercise books • Give one get one – move around the room • Add these examples to your exercise book (2 for each) LO2: EXPLAIN how businesses can be seen to operate in enterprising ways

Employees can assist in operating in an enterprising way It helps if employees also operate in an enterprising way such as: • Suggestion schemes – employees put forward ideas to improve efficiency and save money. A business might offer rewards for good ideas. • Participate in change/new projects - employees encouraged to embrace change or become involved with new projects, however it is important for a business to have good communication for this to work. • Flexible workforce - employees willing to do different jobs (job rotation). This keeps employees motivated and interested in their job but helps the employer as staff are able to cover for each other. This will only work if an employer is willing and able to invest in its employees re: training and two way communication Dyson graduates LO1: IDENTIFY how employees can assist businesses by being enterprising

Benefits of operating in an enterprising way Benefits can be internal and/or external. • If employees feel they are important to the business or their opinions count, they will be more more motivated and will work harder for the business. • Improved reputation from customers due to good quality/up-to-date products. This can increase sales/profit but also might attract people to want to work for the business. • Increased market share as customers move to buy from this business.

  9. Task: Benefits of operating in an enterprising way You may be asked to EVALUATE the possible benefits to businesses of operating in an enterprising way. You may be asked to suggest ways in which a case study business could operate in an enterprising way, and then evaluate which you think would be the greatest benefit.
