  1. Read the Clue Below and Guess the Title. Great You Got It! PR O DU C T E S T I M A T I NG • You’re passing by No Frills and you see a sign in the window that says KD is on sale for 97 cents. You only have $4 in your pocket because you weren’t planning on going shopping. Nevertheless you feel the urge to buy 3 boxes of the cheesy goodness! How could you quickly figure out if you’ll have enough money to by the amount you want?

  2. In Other Words • In other words make a reasonable guess about the answer to a multiplication questions.

  3. Estimating Products

  4. Estimating Products: Mental Math • When estimating with decimals less than 1, look for numbers that are close to 1 or to 0.5. • Example • Estimate. • A) 0.89 x 7.6 b) 0.547 x 10.8 • To estimate 0.89 x 7.6 To estimate 0.547 x 10.8 • Think 1 x 7.6 = 7.6 think 0.5 x 10.8 = 5.4 • Or think 1 x 8 = 8 or think 0.5 x 10 = 5

  5. For Both Solutions on the Last Slide We Rounded • Needed a refresher about rounding? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MIn3zFkEcc

  6. Wait A minute • In question B we rounded down when according to rounding rules we should have rounded up. Take a minute and re-examine the question, why do you think 10. 8 was rounded down to 10 • b) 0.547 x 10.8 • To estimate 0.547 x 10.8 • think 0.5 x 10.8 = 5.4 • or think 0.5 x 10 = 5

  7. Why was 10.8 rounded to 10 instead of 11? • The number 10 is easier to do mental math with since we know that any number multiplied by ten simply has a zero added to it to arrive at the answer ( 1 x 10 = 10; 2X 10 = 20 ; 3 x 10 = 30 etc.). • If you are estimating and trying to do mental math you can calculate an approximate answer much quicker using ten. Use this logic when working on your assigned task.

  8. Your Task • Using the flyers provided pick 5 different items, estimate to total cost of purchasing each. For 2 of your first item, 3 of your second, 4 of your third, 5 of your fourth and 6 of your fifth. • EX. Estimate by using: • 1) Cost of your first item x 2 • 2) Cost of your second item x 3 • 3) Cost of your third item x4 • 4)Cost of you forth item x 5 • 5) Cost of your fifth item x 6
