  1. Chapter 3: God’s People and the Promised Land1. Who were the Israelites? A. The People of the Exodus 1. The Egyptian Pharaoh, Ramses II, is the Pharaoh who enslaved the Israelites in Egypt and had the TenPlagues inflicted on him.

  2. 2. It was the great Jewish Prophet,Moses, who led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. Recall: the Parting of the Red Sea & Passover.

  3. 3. The peoples who became the “Israelites” probably included more than the descendants of the slaves who left Egypt.

  4. Likely, the Israelites included Canaanites, Hapiru, Shasu, and Sea Peoples, along with the original Hebrews.

  5. 4. The Hebrews are the ancestors of the Israelites. The term “Jew” comes from the word “Judah”, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel”.

  6. “Judah” was also the name of an independent kingdom that formed after the nation of Israel split in two in 922 B.C.

  7. 5. The Babylonians attacked and destroyed Judah and the great Jewish Temple of Solomon in 587 B.C.

  8. After the “Babylonian Exile”, the Hebrews returned to the land of Judah and from that point forward they became known as the “Jews”.[Note: Jews – Judah – Judaism].

  9. 6. Two types of evidence tell us about ancient peoples: a. Archeological Evidence (artifacts) and b. Textual Evidence (written records).

  11. 7. Prophets were people who were considered messengers of God, who would either hear, see, or dream a message from God to relay to the people. Moseswas one such great Prophet.

  12. 8. God made a Covenant (Sacred Agreement) with the Jews through Moses. On Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments to give to the people.

  13. These Ten Commandments make up the foundation for the “Judeo-Christian Ethic”, how we believe all persons should behave, regardless of their race, sex, age, ethnicity, religion, etc.

  14. The Ten Commandments1. I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me.2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.4.
