  1. SLO, USO, HMO... What in the world are they talking about? California Baptist University

  2. Assessment hierarchy • University Student Outcomes (USO) are broad and university wide • Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) are slightly narrower and program specific • Learning objectives are more detailed and course specific (may be repeatable)

  3. University (USO) Program-Student Learning (SLO) Course (LO)

  4. What is a USO? • Stated on page 4 of ’06-’07 catalog • Broad behavioral concepts • Applicable to both academic courses and co-curricular activities • Assessed through cross-curricular activities, and post-grad involvement

  5. What is an SLO? • Similar to USO, but more detailed and program specific • What will a KIN graduate be able to do? • You must be able to provide measurable evidence of SLO completion • Assessed using critical assignments (“artifacts” or “projects”)

  6. What is a learning objective? • Very detailed outcome related to a specific course • May be covered in as little as one day • Mastery is assessed through class activities such as essays and exams

  7. Example learning objective • List and describe the five dimensions of holistic wellness (shorter term learned) • Demonstrate characteristics of social responsibility in physical activity (longer term learned)

  8. Example SLO • Students in the PE concentration will create a developmentally appropriate elementary physical education lesson. • Covers both learning objectives & more • KIN 363 would be primary course, but info is drawn from 403, 413, etc..

  9. Example USO • Transfer academic studies to a profession and the workplace • Covers LO, SLO, and more • Minimally demonstrated as a student • Will not be clear until student leaves CBU or demonstrates via field experience
