  1. The Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary Fr. Llane Briese March 19

  2. Today’s Celebration • A Break from the Season of Lent! • St. Joseph, the Husband of Mary: • “The just man shall flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon.” (Psalm 92:13) • “For this just man was given by you as spouse to the Virgin Mother of God…” (Today’s Mass Preface—from the Specific Thanksgiving: anamnetic)

  3. 3 Key Themes • Theme #1: God entrusted his Son to St. Joseph. • Theme #2: God promised David that his kingdom would not end. • Theme #3: In the Temple, Jesus shows that he the son of the Father.

  4. Theme 1: God Entrusted His Son to St. Joseph • “St. Joseph served with loving care your Only Begotten Son…” • Matthew’s Infancy Narrative: Joseph = Main Character: • Accepts Mary into his home. • Watches over Jesus in Egypt while Herod tries to kill him. • He was the ideal father, a servant of his family. • St. John XXIII: Made St. Joseph the Patron of the Universal Church • St. Joseph intercedes for us. (Cf. Collect)

  5. Theme 2:David’s Kingdom Will Never End • God had promised David that his kingdom would never end. (First Reading: 2 Samuel 7) • “I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm.” • For years, God’s people trusted in this promise amidst great trials. • Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of this promise. • This feast reminds us that God is trustworthy.

  6. Theme 3:Jesus is Son of God • Mary to Jesus: • “Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” • Although not a biological father, St. Joseph served as a father-figure to Jesus. • However, Jesus’ real father is God the Father. • By our Baptism, through the grace of divine filiation, we are all sons and daughters of the Father. Hence, we can cry out to him as Our Father.

  7. Conclusion • Today’s feast day is a reminder that we are never abandoned by God. • Through St. Joseph, we have both an example of human faithfulness and well as the fulfillment of the promise of divine faithfulness. • Our Prayer Today: Keep us always faithful, God, that we may be worthy Christians, sharers in God’s faithfulness.
