Things to notice

  • 1. gradual disintegration – reflection of savagery

  • 2. the strong attack the weak

  • 3. Jack is turning into a monster; hides behind symbolic war mask; has discarded civilization completely

  • 4.blood imagery – boys start hunt with clay on faces, but come back covered with blood = symbolic of their further deterioration toward savagery

Things to Notice…

Things to notice1

  • 5. Ralph’s inner conflict: jealous of wild excitement of hunters; resentful of their irresponsibility; tries to control situation by calling a meeting, but there is little response to him or his rational plan

  • 6.FORESHADOWING: Ralph Walking Alone Down The Hill. This foreshadows the isolation he will feel throughout the rest of the novel.

Things to Notice…

Inside the novel

  • The social and moral deterioration has been subtle up to this point, but now it comes to the forefront.

  • The author shows that a great deal of time has passed. A rhythm has been established. The civilized ritual of cleaning oneself has been discarded.

Inside the Novel…

Theme

  • The breakdown of socialized behavior. Jack wears his new “mask” and all of his inhibitions disappear. He is now able to complete the act of killing.

Theme…

Symbolism

  • Piggy and Piggy’s glasses. Jack has attacked Piggy and broken his glasses. Piggy, symbol of rules and justice, is partially handicapped. Jack is breaking down the rules of civilization on the island.

Symbolism…

Parallelism

  • Jack hunts and kills the pigs; littlun Henry plays “hunt and control” with the sea creatures (61).

Parallelism…

Characterization

  • Roger. His malicious nature is demonstrated when he taunts Henry. He throws stones at him, but misses him. There is something inherently evil in the way he teases Henry. The author suggests that EVIL is present even in Henry, who torments the organisms in the pool—and perhaps WE all have something evil in US that will surface under the right circumstances.

Characterization…

Ralph vs jack

  • Peer Pressure. Ralph has ordered that the signal fire must be maintained. Jack orders his boys (the fire tenders) to hunt. The fire goes out. This fact is made all the more poignant since it occurs when Ralph spots a ship.
