BahrainCSR Newsletter Page 1 C S R C o n c e p t w o r l d w i d e CSR Concept world wide Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) means businesses and organizations working responsibly and contributing positively to the communities they operate in. It involves working with employees, their families, the local community and society at large to improve their quality of life. Companies that operate in a socially responsible way strengthen their reputations. In business, reputation is everything. It determines the extent to which customers want to buy from you, partners are willing to work with you and your standing in the community Companies recognize their responsibility to their employees, their community and the environment. They define CSR informally. Their understanding of this concept is largely influenced by the personal values of the business owner/s or the CSR champion in the company. Often this definition is implicit, and not necessarily reflected in a formal company-wide commitment.

  4. Page 3 W h y C S R i n B a h r a I n BahrainCSR Newsletter The purpose of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is to make corporate business activity and corporate culture become sustainable in its three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. The only pathway with a future is that which makes all stakeholders sustainable. Corporations cannot flourish in detriment of a stakeholder, and, in general, of the welfare of all ranks of society. Thus, corporations must abandon their zero-sum game mentality and adopt a sustainable business culture that benefits all stakeholders in an equitable manner. This is why Bahrain CSR program attempts to offer long term business benefits to the community and their families while making a positive contribution to the development of Bahrain society. The social and economic impact of the firm's existing operations is also closely monitored to reduce the risk of a backlash from local communities, activists or national governments. Corporate social responsibility means that organizations have moral, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities in addition to their responsibilities to earn a fair return for investors and comply with the law. A traditional view of the corporation suggests that its primary, if not sole, responsibility is to its owners, or stockholders. However, CSR requires organizations to adopt a broader view of its responsibilities that includes not only stockholders, but many other constituencies as well, including employees, suppliers, customers, the local community, local, governments, environmental groups, and other special interest groups.
