  1. The Asia Scope and Sequence for Studies of Society and Environment Professional Learning Workshop

Aims of the workshop • Introduce educators to the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools (the National Statement) and the Asia Scope and Sequence for Studies of Society and Environment resource (ASSS) • Introduce educators to new units of work developed to support the ASSS • Provide opportunities for educators to reflect on current practice, whether in policy development, school leadership or classroom teaching, in relation to engaging young Australians with Asia through SOSE/HSIE and in Civics and Citizenship classrooms.

Aims of the workshop (con’t) • Assist educators to use the National Statement and the ASSS in their planning to introduce or strengthen engagement with Asia • Encourage educators to view the National Statement and the ASSSSE resource as part of a suite of interdependent curriculum resources that also includes the National 2006 Statements of Learning for Civics and Citizenship and their own State/Territory curriculum

Purpose of the Asia Scope and Sequence for Studies of Society and Environment • Articulate key curriculum concepts and content across the compulsory years of schooling • Provide advice and support to teachers of SOSE/HSIE and Civics and Citizenship in order to facilitate their efforts to engage young Australians with Asia

The Asia Scope and Sequence for Studies of Society and Environment – and Civics and Citizenship • ASSS incorporates aspects of the Statements of Learning in Civics and Citizenship (shaded on the document) • Outlines the knowledge, skills, understandings and capacities that students should have the opportunity to learn in civics and Citizenship • All States and Territories have agreed to implement the CC Statements in their curriculum • The Statements include Australia’s links and relationships with the Asia- Pacific as well as other global connections.

The ASSS • Also contains in the professional elaborations links to exemplary resources which are available to support Studies of Asia in the classroom. • As well there have been developed a range of online material to support the ASSS. These will be extended over time and that is freely available and accessible to teachers in Australian schools

That is why I am committed to making Australia the most Asia-literate country in thecollective West. By investing in Asian languages and cultural education in Australia's schools, my vision is for the next generation of Australians – businessmen and women, economists, accountants, lawyers, architects, artists, film-makers and performers – to develop language skills which open their region to them. This is part of our long-term vision for a fully regionally engaged Australian nation in this Asia-Pacific century that now unfolds before us.
