  3. Proposal for Consideration • Require .5 credits of computer education • Begin with the graduating class of 2014 • Reduce general electives from 11 credits to 10.5 credits • Offer options for different knowledge and skill levels • Encourage students to take in 9th or 10th grade

  4. Proposed Graduation Requirements • English – 4 credits • Social Studies – 3 credits • Mathematics – 3 credits • Science – 2 credits • Health - .5 credits • Physical Education – 1.5 credits • Computer Education - .5 credits • Electives – 10.5 credits • TOTAL Credits = 25 credits

Proposed Course Sequence • 6 weeks of keyboarding basics in 4th and 5th grade • 9 weeks of keyboarding and computer education in 6th and 7th grade • Computer education is an elective in 8th grade • High school students would receive 18 weeks of computer education, preferably in 9th or 10th grade • Students with accelerated skills are eligible for Computer Applications I • Computer Applications I & II are eligible for articulation with Fox Valley Technical College • Advanced computer education courses are available

Rationale • Prepare students for post-secondary education and the workplace • Shiocton students could graduate without taking a formal computer class during the last 5 years of school • Approximately 25% of Shiocton seniors graduate without taking a computer education class in high school • Seven (7) CWC and/or local high schools already require computer education to graduate • Technology skills are a major component of 21st Century Skills • National technology literacy exam beginning in 2012

  7. Cost Impact • No additional staff required • No additional hardware/software or textbooks are required • Courses are in place and are periodically reviewed and updated
