  1. Lesson 2 August 25th, 2010 Ergonomics

  2. Questions- Homework / MSIPFrom Yesterday – hand in • What are some benefits of creating and maintaining a portfolio? • How can your portfolio be useful to potential employers? • What can you do to maintain a high quality portfolio?

  3. What is Ergonomics? • Ergonomics is the study of workers’ interactions with their working environment.

  4. Ergonomics • Specialists in ergonomics study the ways in which work surroundings can be improved to keep workers comfortable, injury-free, and therefore, more productive. • Research has found that ergonomic aspects of work environments influence workers’ productivity, health, and frequency of absences.

  5. Ergonomics These factors include: • Temperature • Lighting • Air quality • Furniture • Equipment

  6. Injuries • The most common category of ergonomic-related injuries is musculoskeletal injuries (MSI). These are more commonly known as repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). MSI occurs when a person performs the same task over and over. Eventually, nerves, muscles, tendons, or other body tissues can be damaged.

  7. Injuries • The most common MSI in North America is Carpal tunnel syndrome(CTS). • CTS is caused by long hours of keyboarding at a computer workstation that does not have a keyboard rest. • The odd wrist angledecreasesblood flow and compresses the median nerve. • Symptoms: sore wrists, loss of strength, numbness, finger cramps.

  8. What can you do to improve your working environment? • Check off each step after the equipment has been 1. The monitor should be set at a height so that your neck will be straight, adjusted properly.

  9. What can you do to improve your working environment? • Check off each step after the equipment has been 2. Your elbows should be at 90 degrees, with the arms hanging naturally at their sides

  10. What can you do to improve your working environment? • Check off each step after the equipment has been 3. Keep your hands in-line with the forearms so that the wrists are straight, not bending up, down, or to either side.

  11. What can you do to improve your working environment? 4. Thighs should be roughly parallel to the floor, with your feet flat on the floor. Your legs should not be dangling.

  12. What can you do to improve your working environment? 5. If necessary, use a footrest to support your feet.

  13. What can you do to improve your working environment? 6. Your chair should be fully adjustable (ie. Seat height, backrest height, and seat tilt.) It should have a well-formed lumbar (lower back) support to help maintain the lumbar curve.

  14. What can you do to improve your working environment? 7. There should be enough space to use the mouse. Use a wrist rest or arm rest so that your wrist is straight and your arm muscles are not overworked.

  15. What can you do to improve your working environment? 8. Use an adjustable document holder to hold source documents at the same height, angle and distance as the monitor. ere should be enough space to use the mouse. Use a wrist rest or arm rest so that your wrist is straight and your arm muscles are not overworked.

  16. Take breaks • Take a 60 secondbreak every 30 minutes. • Change your body position and stretch

  17. Stretches • Neck and shoulders 1. Shoulder shrug • To relieve early symptoms of tension in the should and neck area • Raise shoulders towards the ears and hold for 3-5 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

  18. Stretches 2. Head Glide • To stretch your neck and shoulder muscles • Sit upright, and without lifting your chin glide your head back to give yourself a double chin. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat 5-10 times.

  19. Stretches 3. Neck Relaxer • To relax the neck • Sit upright. Inhale. As you exhale drop your head slowly to the left, trying to touch your ear to your shoulder. Repeat on the right.

  20. Stretches 4. Shoulder Roll • To relax the shoulder muscles • Inhale, slowly raise your shoulders towards your ears, and roll them backward 5 times in circular motion.

  21. Work Environment • Temperature should be kept between 20 and 24 ° C. • Air circulation – circulating air minimizes the amount of dust, andbacteria in the air. • Cleanliness – Dust, mould and other particles can cause allergies and respiratory problems.

  22. Work Environment • Cleanliness – Dust, mould and other particles can cause allergies and respiratory problems. • Lighting and Colour – Lighting should be kept stable. Flickering causes eyestrain. • Colour should be soft and neutral- pure white, very dark, or shiny surfacescan cause fatigue.

  23. Furniture • Chairs – chairs should be adjusted so thatelbows are bent at a 90 ° angle when using the keyboard. The seat should be firm and provide circulation and the backrest should be firm and allow arm movement. • Work surfaces – Tables should provide enough space for people to work without bumping into each other when seating positions are changed.

  24. Computer hardware • covered tomorrow.

  25. Questions: Homework/MSIP • Define ergonomics in your own words. • Why should employers be interested in ergonomics? • What are four steps to ensure that people working at computers will be safe and comfortable? • What is the most common ergonomic-related injury? What are the symptoms?
