  4. Civil Rights • Worked Behind the scenes to discredit McCarthyism • Did not support initially support Brown v the Board of Education • Did send troops to Arkansas to support desegregation of Schools • Signed legislation that provided protection to African-American Voters

  5. Foreign Policy • Signed an Armistice ending the Korean War • Supported the CIA in covert opps. against communist • Supported Anti-Communist Government in Vietnam • Held a summit with Nakita Khrushchev in 1959 to talk peace • Lost favor of the USSR in 1960 when US spy plane was shot down

  6. Domestic Policy • Achieved numerous legislative victories despite a Democratic majority in Congress • Continued New Deal and Fair Deal, • Strengthened Social Security • Increased the minimum wage • Created the Dept. of Health Education and Welfare • Created the Interstate highway system
