  1. What is an argument?

  2. What is a written argument? • It is always about the topic of the text. • It is a claim or series of claims an author makes about how things are or should be. • It is supported by evidence. • It’s purpose is to convince or persuade

  3. What are claims? • Claims are an author’s opinion about some idea or topic, they are not facts. • Claims usually come before the evidence that supports them. • Claims can be counterarguments that challenge those who disagree

  4. What do claims do? • Establish the author’s opinions • Support the main claim

  5. How do I know if a statement is a claim? ASK YOURSELF: • Is this statement an opinion? • Is this opinion supported by any evidence (e.g. facts, stats, research studies, anecdotes, expert testimony etc.)? • Does this statement support the author’s main claim? IF YES TO ALL 3, then it is a CLAIM!!!

  6. SOOO… • Since claims are the opinions of the author, let’s now see if we can identify what an opinion is!!

  7. Is it a claim or evidence? • According to the National Science Foundation, 23% of teenagers are obese. • Fast food industries are to blame for America’s obesity problem. • The problem of obesity in America is not just obese people’s – it is all of ours. • President Obama supported the idea of charging parents of obese children with crimes. EVIDENCE CLAIM CLAIM EVIDENCE

  8. ___ The problem of obesity in America is not just obese people’s – it is all of ours. ___ Obesity should be America’s number one health concern. ___ Fast food restaurants close to schools are making kids fat. ___ Parents who are not at home when kids get home from school contribute to the obesity problem. ___ There are not enough calorie information charts on fast food restaurant menus. Out of McDonalds’ 15,000 restaurants in America, only 25% of them have calorie information pamphlets for customers to view. According to the government, obesity is the leading cause of preventable death in America. A 550 lbs. 5th grader named Diandre told CNN news that he has to eat fast food because no one is at home to cook for him. Health treatment of obese kids costs American taxpayers $500 million a year. Irving Williams, an obese 9th grader, says he and his friends eat at the Taco Bell located a quarter mile from his school everyday. Which claim does the evidence support? CLAIM EVIDENCE D B E C A
