  2. Five Discourses • Chps 5-7: Sermon on the Mount • Chp 10: Mission Discourse • Chp 13: Collection of Parables • Chp 18: Instructions for the community • Chps 23-25: Teaching concerning the Future

  3. Discourses: Ending • At the end of the four discourses (7:28; 11:1; 13:53; 19:1) the same words occur - transition from teaching to narrative: “When Jesus had finished these sayings”. At the end of the fifth, the word “all” is added (26:1)

  4. Judaism and Christianity • Historical events contributing to separation • War of 66-73 CE, destruction of Temple in 70 CE • 70 CE: Pharisee named Rabbi Johanan Ben Zakkai gained permission from the Romans to move his academy to Jamnia (Jabneh), coast of Palestine

  5. Rebuilding of Judaism • Reconstitute Judaism along more uniform lines • Group clearly distinguishes itself from Jews who believe in Jesus • Final decisions about which writings to be considered canonical in Hebrew scripture (90 CE)

  6. Jesus and the Law • Jesus as New Moses: Authority • Law includes Oral Law of Pharisees (Later codified as Talmud - huge collection of Jewish religious tradition consisting of Mishnah and Gemarah). Palestinian - 450 CE and Babylonian - 500 CE.
