  1. 2005 California Mathematics Framework An update of the 2000 Framework for the Community

  2. Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools(Adopted 1997) The Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools (K-12) establish what every student in California can and needs to learn in mathematics to be prepared for advanced mathematics, science, and technical careers.

  3. Community Involvement Mathematics education is everybody’s business. Parents community members, business and industry can all make significant contributions.

  4. Mathematics Framework Available Online at: www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/

  5. The Framework includes: • Standard Organization • Instructional Strategies • Grade Level Considerations • Key Content Standards • Assessments • Universal Access

  6. Also included: • Professional Development • Use of Technology • Criteria for Evaluating Instructional Materials • Intervention and Algebra Readiness Materials

  7. An Essential Balance Procedural Skills Conceptual Understanding Problem Solving

  8. Kindergarten Through Grade Seven • Organized by grade level • Five Strands • Number Sense • Algebra and Functions • Measurement and Geometry • Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability • Mathematical Reasoning

  9. Algebra I Geometry Algebra II Probability and Statistics Trigonometry Linear Algebra Mathematical Analysis Advanced Placement Probability and Statistics Calculus Grades Eight Through Twelve

  10. Three Types of Programs • Basic grade level • Mathematics Intervention (grades 4-7) • Algebra Readiness (for students in grade eight or higher who are not prepared for algebra)

  11. What grade do students? • Use the commutative and associative rules to simplify mental calculations and to check results. • Identify, sort, and classify objects by attribute and identify objects that do not belong to a particular group.

  12. What grade do students? • Write and evaluate an algebraic expressions for a given situation using up to three variables. • Interpret and evaluate mathematical expressions that now use parentheses.

  13. Algebra & Functions Identify, sort and classify objects by attribute and identify objects that do not belong to a particular group. (Kindergarten) Use the commutative and associative rules to simplify mental calculations and to check results. (2nd Grade)

  14. Algebra & Functions Interpret and evaluate mathematical expressions that now use parentheses. (4th Grade) Write and evaluate an algebraic expressions for a given situation, using up to three variables. (7th Grade)

  15. Types of Assessments Assessment and instruction should be inextricably linked Assessments that are crucial to achieving the standards: • Entry level assessment • Progress monitoring (formative) assessment • Summative evaluation

  16. Summative Assessments • Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program • California High School Exit Exam • Early Assessment Program

  17. CDE Mathematics Contacts • Frameworks/Instructional Materials • Mary Sprague msprague@cde.ca.gov • Professional Development and Curriculum Support • Yvonne Evans yevans@cde.ca.gov • Kay Garcia kgarcia@cde.ca.gov • Assessment • Jane Liang (STAR) jliang@cde.ca.gov • Jessica Valdez (CAHSEE) jvaldez@cde.ca.gov • Special Education • Jill Larson jlarson@cde.ca.gov
