  1. Abstract: This project is an attempt to modify the standard type of self regulating tidegates in order to lessen the cost for the city. The reason for needing these tidegates is because the invasive species, PhragmitesAustralis, has been infiltrating the Cove River, which is a habitat and resource for many native species. Due to tidegates restricting the normal flow of water, an abundance of salts accumulated. Phragmites thrive in very salty environments, and are able to outcompete all the local plants in such enviroments. Having no tidegate, however, can lead to floods causing major property damage. This is where SRTs come into play. They are able to allow water to flow normally, but close when the water level reaches a certain height, which stops flooding. Problem Statement: This project will seek to improve SRTs in various ways. \IV: Price of materials, labor, etc. DV: Cost. Hypothesis, if using the given design, the SRT will be cheaper than a standard one. Data: The stainless steel will be 6 inches thick and 10 feet wide. The aluminum will be 6 inches thick and 10 feet wide. The supplier of the metal will be Earthworks Recycling, as they use recycled metal and have good prices. Aluminum Price: $1263.60 (Weight of aluminum=168.48 lbs/cubic foot) (6 inch thick, 10 feet wide) (168.48 / 2 x 10 = 842.4) (842.4 x $1.50 = $1263.60) Stainless Steel Price: $3706.58 (Weight of stainless steel =494.21lbs/cubic foot) (6 inch thick, 10 feet wide) (494.21 / 2 x 10 = 2471.05) (2571.05 x $1.50 = $3706.58) High Density Polyurethane Part: $2500 (must be custom built, includes labor to build) Total material cost of tidegate: 7440.18 Labor: 6 days to construct, 5 workers, 10$ an hour, 8 hour days: $2400 Concrete for the dam: roughly 10x12 Final Cost: $9840.8 Future Work: To improve this tidegate, an actual calculation of the custom part & dam must be done. Also, it would be wise to test this on a smaller scale rather than do the whole project blindly. Also, calculating how large the custom part must be is also preferable. To improve on the design itself, a system that can facilitate fish travel as well should be designed. Works Cited Coyote Steel “Weights of Various Metals in Pounds per Cubic Foot” Web. TIDE GATES (n.d.): n. pag. Web. Conclusion: The hypothesis for this new tidegate is “If the new design is used, then it will be cheaper.” Originally, a similar tidegate costs $29,050.00. (http://www.jueltide.com/images/A%20Shopper's%20Guide%20to%20Tide%20Gates.pdf), but this new one is less than $10,000, which makes it far superior in cost, and proves the hypothesis. This price does not include implementation or the cost of the dam/intake pipe. However, it will still be cheaper once they are taken into effect, as although there is no exact figure, rough estimates indicate the whole project costing under $24,000 (not including taxes). Possible errors include how resilient the new SRT will be, as it has not been tested yet. Also, the exact size of it is unsure, so an estimated width was used. Finally, the custom part had to be estimated based on similar ones, and it is unsure how much it would cost. This tidegate is still valid, however, as none of the factors will push it past the $29,050.00 benchmark.
