  1. Magnetism & The Periodic Table

  2. Periodic Table • Everything in the world is made up of elements • Invented by: DimitriMendeleeve • There are a total of 111 known elements

  3. The Transition Elements • On the periodic table located in the middle • Strapping, robust metals

  4. Iron • Major Ideas • Symbol: Fe • Color: Gray • Classification: Metallic • Found most: • most abundant element • In the human body • I am most useful when I am mixed with small amounts of carbon to produce steel • Earliest know use: 2500 B.C

  5. Cobalt • Major Ideas • Symbol: Co • Color: Gray • Classification: Metallic • Found most: • Glass • Objects for beauty • Earliest know use: 1735

  6. Nickel • Major Ideas • Symbol: Ni • Color: Gray • Classification: Metallic • Found most: • Makes materials stronger • Batteries (not so much anymore…) • Earliest know use: 1751

  7. Magnetism & Atoms

  8. Magnetism • Three major ideas: • An invisible forced caused by certain solids and fluids • Magnets= have north and south poles that can attract each other • Neither of the Earth’s magnetic poles actually at the geographic poles

  9. Magnetism • b) Properties • Sprinkle iron filings near me and you’ll see… I am surrounded by an invisible field of force • My power is from the spin of their electrons

  10. Magnetism • c) Current uses of magnets • Compass • ATM cards/ Credit Cards • Security tags d) Earliest known use: 2 B. C

  11. Atom • There are more than: 150 • “Fundamental particles” which means: • Cannot be broken down into smaller particles • Ruled over by: • Strong and weak forces

  12. Atom “Atom Family” • Three major ideas: • All matter in the universe is made up of • 117 different types of atoms • Stable character with a long history • Scientists discovered: the atom took 100 years to discover

  13. Atom “Atom Family” • c) Description: Mostly I’m space • Made up of: • Protons: positive particle • Neutrons: neutral particle • Electrons: negative particle

  14. Electron • Three major ideas: • Fundamental particle found orbiting an atom’s nucleus • “always” as many electrons as protons in an atom • A feather-light tyke that packs a tremendous punch

  15. Electron • b) Charge is: negative • c) I normally zip around outer regions of an atom • d) I always return and I can’t help it- with a negative charge equal to a proton’s positive charge. I am constantly drawn toward the nucleus. • e) Date of discovery: 1897

  16. Proton • Three major ideas: • Subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom • “loves” to be at the center of things • NOT a fundamental particle- made of quarks

  17. Proton • b) Charge is: positive • c) I cannot bear to be around other protons • d) I am a big fellow, around 2,000 times bigger than an electron • e) Date of discovery: 1918

  18. Neutron • Three major ideas: • This fat fellow is the last piece of the atomic puzzle • Only affected by the strong force and gravity • Made up of quarks and is the key to nuclear chain reactions

  19. Neutron • b) Charge is: neutral • c) I am a calming influence- without me, protons would repel one another and fly off to infinity • d) Date of discovery: 1932
