  15. So What Is an Advisor/Mentor to Do?

Be a Vocal Advocate for the 21st Century Student • Demand a relentless focus on transparent data to drive decisions: stop doing what doesn’t work • Join or help create networks and partnerships supporting students’ college access and success • Help colleges do their part and hold them accountable

Design and Implement a 21st Century Support System for 21st Century Students • Create partnerships with K-12, faculty, employers, and the community • Focus on pathways to college and career (its about learning AND jobs) • Infuse technology to expand capacity, improve quality, and reduce costs

Design and Implement a 21st Century Advising/Mentoring System for 21st Century Students • Work to provide advisors/mentors who look like the students you serve • Support accelerated progress to degrees • Focus on the whole student: financial, cultural, academic needs • Focus on transitions (Middle to HS, HS to college, transfer, college to work)

Design and Implement a 21st Century Advising/Mentoring System for 21st Century Students • Create one stops to ensure students find all financial supports available • Provide students/parents with information on the value of college and the multiple paths to a credential • Demand information on college outcomes and help students “match” to the college that is best for them
