5. SIC and CPC background • The Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (SIC 5th edition) -based upon the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC ver 3) with suitable adaptations for local conditions. (6th edition based on Ver. 3.1 not implemented) • The SIC was designed for the following: • - To classify according to kind of economic activity and • - Provide a standardised framework for: • Collection, Tabulation, Analysis, and • Presentation of statistical data on establishments • -To promote uniformity and comparability of statistics compiled from different sources • The CPC ver 1.1 was adopted as it was.

AGRICULTURAL, HUNTING, FORESTRY AND FISHING MINING AND QUARRYING MANUFACTURING ELECTRICITY, GAS AND WATER SUPPLY CONSTRUCTION WHOLESALE TRADE, RETAIL TRADE, MOTOR TRADE AND ACCOMMODATION TRANSPORT FINANCIAL SERVICES, INSURANCE, REAL ESTATE AND BUSINESS SERVICES COMMUNITY, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL SERVICES LIST OF MAJOR DIVISIONS

7. SIC (ISIC) status • SIC adopted and extended to the 5th level • Business register for enterprise profiling, with regular updates from SARS • Based on turnover, size groups • Changes to the main activity done by the BR • Survey areas feed info on the SMS • Samples and publications on a 3 digit level • Received the electronic copy for Rev 4, in Aug 2008

8. CPC status • Coding was done for the previous LSS • Implemented in the PPI as from January 2008, for low level index compilation • Same products codes to be used for any other survey areas (CPC Product Frame) • Links with other systems

9. Classifications challenges • Change of main activity • Misclassifications • Terminology , i.e. changing of the wording/phrases • Further breakdown of the ISIC and CPC • CPC’s group classification • E.g. Basic Metal (Ferrous and non-ferrous to Basic iron and steel, Rolled drawn and folded products and other Non-ferrous articles) • Limitations in terms of missing products

10. Way forward and conclusion • Currently reviewing ISIC 4 and CPC 2 • Integrated plan from all divisions and stakeholders • Review of the historical time series • SADC to start planning for the regional implementation • Assistance in terms of the CPC services
