  4. 2011/12 • Psychology student - Aideen • Erasmus academic placement at Phillips-Universität Marburg • Spring 2012 • Present occupation – Graduate of BSc in Psychology, 2013

  5. 2012/13 • Student of Psychology – Thomas • Erasmus academic placement at University of the West of Scotland • Spring semester 2013 • Present occupation – 3rd year undergraduate

  6. Barriers to Participation • Logistic • Financial • Integration or Social Inclusion • Academic • Fear of Unknown • Attitudes

  7. Logistic & Financial Challenges • Finding the right assistant • Finding the right destination University • Setting up the student support systems • Ensuring sufficient financial support

  8. Integration • Academic integration • Social integration • Consider whether all students experience the above or not • International office can provide opportunities through social occasions and buddy programmes

  9. Academic Challenges • Adapting to a different academic system • Becoming accustomed to language and accents • Studying and examinations • Results and their impact at home University

Fear of Unknown • Adequate preparation can alleviate unknown – think of all eventualities • Use of systems – disability, acc. & int. offices • Read former student reports • Visiting host University beforehand • Essential to have persons at host and home University who are in contact and GET IT

  11. Attitudes • Get people on your side before and during placement • Buddy Programme – make full use of • Reliable assistant(s) – greatest barrier? • Ask for help when needed – staff are there for that purpose
