WELCOME TO INDIA – WORK IN PROGRESS Strange Times: • Global growth in not led by a few countries • 24 countries are experiencing growth in excess of 7%, including Pakistan, Argentina, & China and India is more than 8% • Economic liberalization is known, but also social and psychological liberalization is occurring. • Since the 73rd Amendment in 1993, mandatory elections in village clusters has resulted in 3.2 million local legislators (1 million are women) • 40 years ago, 8 towns with more than 1 million population. Now there are 36 • Flattening effect not reached beyond a few metropolitan towns • Tata Group spent 2 billion to buy British Tea Company Tetley • Indian flag flies on 5th Avenue in New York City – Pierre Hotel • India has never followed the normal paths of capitalism and democracy but its entrepreneurial spirit is flourishing so to is the educational business Source: World Business, May 2006
