  1. OVERVIEW OF EDA INDUSTRYVTU-VSI-ISA Confluence MeetingFebruary 2006 Dr.H.V.ANANDA

  2. Agenda • Characteristics of EDA tools • Challenges faced by EDA industry. • Broad categories of EDA tools • Main activities in EDA development centre • Skillsets needed • Main players • Overview of Synplicity

  3. Characteristics of EDA tools • Electronic design automation (EDA)-Set of software tools used for VLSI chip design. • Highly sophisticated and implement complex algorithms. • Typical EDA software product contain • Boolean logic optimizers • Language parsers, lexical analyzers • Logic generators • Logic simulators • Pattern recognition • Parallel computations • User friendly GUI • Extremely compact and fast access databases

  4. Characteristics of EDA tools(Contd) • Need hundreds of man-hour effort for development. • Need real engineering skills for development and testing. • One would need to use all he/she has learnt in engineering and more… • Needs interdisciplinary knowledge. • Electronics • Complex mathematics • Computer science/engineering

  5. Challenges and opportunities • We are witnessing rapid advances in chip technology. Every new generation of technology brings forth newer phenomenon and challenges. • EDA industry has to be a step ahead of the chip technology and continue to innovate and develop design methods and tools capable of addressing these new phenomena and design problems.

  6. EDA tool Categories Based on Design methodology • Full custom design • Standard cell based design • FPGA design • Structured ASIC design

  7. EDA tool Categories(Contd) Based on Design flows • Implementation tools • Logic and Physical Synthesis • Design for test • Full custom layout • Floor planning • Place and Route • Verification tools • Simulation • Timing analysis • Formal verification • Power analysis • Signal integrity • DRC and LVS

  8. Main Activities • Tool Development • Compilers • Mappers • Placers • Routers • Timing engines • Parasitic extractors • Tool Testing(Software) • Code coverage • Memory leakage

  9. Main Activities (Contd) • Tool Testing (Application) • Requirement specs • Feature Test plans • Development of test cases • Regression testing • Analysis of failures • Quality of results • Run time • Timing • Area • Running large designs

  10. Skill Sets General • Engineering degree in electrical /electronics/computer science • Non engineering degree with short term course in C and C++ is no good. • Good attitude towards problem solving and initiative taking • Good communication skills and professional mannerism • Tool Development • Data structures (list, tree, graphs) • Algorithms (sorting, searching, hashing) • C, C++ • Digital design • Lex, yacc • Perl, python • Application testing • Digital circuits • HDL-Verilog/VHDL • Scripting languages like Perl/shell • Flows • Concepts of simulation, Synthesis, P&R etc • Concepts of timing

  11. Players in the field • Cadence • Interra systems • Mentor Graphics • Magma • Synplicity • Softjin • Synopsys
