  5. NURSES • Stretch base of knowledge about mental illness • Advocate for Patients • NEED for Mental Health Nurses! • Nurses are the beginning and end of all mental health treatment

  6. Understanding PTSD • Dr. Carrol Berndet • PTSD can occur when a person experiences any kind of trauma….loss of CONTROL, SAFETY, and SECURITY. • Best to undergo treatment with Support Groups and get Feedback from other people to develop Rational Explanations- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Care of the Caregiver • Teri Vega-Stromberg • Defined nurse burnout and compassion fatigue • Nurse burn-out: Periods of prolonged stress • Nursingburnout.net • Compassion fatigue: emotional stress and burnout combined. • Importance of self-care • Find an outlet! (Exercise, outdoors, etc.) • Have a best friend that will tell you when you are overextended. • Communicate your needs to others!

  9. Child/Adolescent Behavioral Health • Children often go after things/behave badly towards things they love the most (pets, siblings) • Privacy is different concerning adolescents • Records and Treatment are PRIVATE for ages 14 and older INSTEAD of 18 years old

Nursing Delegation In Wisconsin • Thomas Neumann MS, RN • History of the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act • National Council of State Boards of Nursing • 2006 NCSBN & ANA Joint Statement on Nursing Delegation: • The RN assumes overall accountability for delegation • Delegated to staff must demonstrate abilities • “If you can’t educate, don’t delegate”

House of Delegates • Parliamentary Procedure • Edgewood: 4 Delegates out of 7 possible • WSNA Board will be at Nurses Day at the Capitol Tuesday March 5th • Constituent School Reports • Many schools instituting mentor programs • Community blood pressure clinics, checking blood sugars at health fairs, blood drives • WSNA President was impressed with ECSNA’s Report

SUNDAY • WSNA Board of Delegates Elections • 18 positions • Most of them filled by three different schools that have a much lower membership and less delegates than us • Only one person was running for each seat • A lot of 1st, 2nd and 3rd semester students filled these positions • Edgewood students could easily get on the board
