  1. Why a co-ordination action about Enhanced Geothermal Systems ?P. Ledru & A. Genter Engine Launching Conference 12-15 February 2006 Orléans, France Opening Session

  2. Why a co-ordination action about Enhanced Geothermal Systems ? • An expression of interest from the EC 6th FP Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  3. The European targets for sustainable energy systems and geothermal energy • Directive 2001/77/EC : doubling the contribution of renewable energy from 6 to 12% of total energy consumption by 2010. • The White Paper (Community Strategy and Action Plan, 1997) : doubling (500 to 1000 MW) of electricity production, increase from 750 to 2,5 MW for heat production of geothermal origin. • From 6.5 (5th FP) to more than 10 M€ (6th FP) dedicated to geothermal energy Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  4. A priority thematic area for "Sustainable energy systems“ • a need for co-ordinating ongoing research and promoting the development and uptake of innovative methods and technologies to expand the exploitation of Unconventional Geothermal Resources, in particular Enhanced Geothermal Systems. • A major scope is the identification of gaps that hamper the development of geothermal energy and definition of research targets for the future • Prioritizing research needs Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006 >2

  5. Why a co-ordination action about Enhanced Geothermal Systems ? • An expression of interest from the EC 6th FP • A renewed interest for the geothermal energy from deep sources Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  6. A renewed interest for the geothermal energy from deep sources • The US Department Of Energy program for 2006-2011 • The challenge (…) is to develop and deploy the technology needed to capture the larger, deeper, cooler and less permeable resource base – the Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  7. Geopowering the West… Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  8. A renewed interest for the geothermal energy from deep sources • The US Department Of Energy program for 2006-2011 • The challenge (…) is to develop and deploy the technology needed to capture the larger, deeper, cooler and less permeable resource base – the Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) • The on-going industrial activity in Australia • The know-how and technology of mineral and oil exploration to explore and mine heat sources at depth Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  9. The “heat” rush Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  10. A renewed interest for the geothermal energy from deep sources • The US Department Of Energy program for 2006-2011 • The challenge (…) is to develop and deploy the technology needed to capture the larger, deeper, cooler and less permeable resource base – the Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) • The on-going industrial activity in Australia • The know-how and technology of mineral and oil exploration to explore and mine heat sources at depth • The European exploration projects • The pilot site of Soultz sous Forêts and the future exploration sites of Basel, Landau… Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  11. A continent to explore… Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  12. Why a co-ordination action about Enhanced Geothermal Systems ? • An expression of interest from the EC 6th FP • A renewed interest for the geothermal energy from deep sources • A need for building an innovative research network for Europe “Today, the geothermal energy faces both old and new challenges, as the high cost and risk of geothermal development remain major issues that hinder renewed interest in geothermal development” (2006-2011 DOE program) Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  13. Challenges • Scientific challenge to understand the distribution of heat and permeability at depth in the uppermost crust. • Technological and economic challenge to improve and render cost-efficient investigation and development technology • Integration of different research paths that currently exist • Communication to rally the support of policy makers and investors and, in certain cases, increase the social acceptance of a broader community. Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  14. Facing old and new challenges means… • Capitalisation of knowledge and state of art • Identification of gaps and barriers • Defining new research projects to overcome these gaps and barriers • ….. How to do that? • structuring the “geothermal” community, • strengthening the links of the scientific community with the industrial partners and decision makers, • restoring a political support • …. Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  15. through the ENGINE co-ordination action… • A bottom-up phase: workshops and conferences as key elements to present an updated framework of activities in the Scientific and technical European reference Manual • A web site to have access to the updated framework of activities • An expertise phase to prepare a Best Practice Handbook Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  16. Planning of the Co-ordination Action WP1 Project Management WP2 Information and dissemination system WP3. Investigation of UGR and EGS Mid-term Conference WP6. Expertise on investigation of UGR and EGS Launching Conf. WP4. Drilling, stimulation and reservoir assessment WP9. Risk evaluation for the development of geothermal energy Mid-term Conference Final Conference WP7. Expertise on drilling, stimulation and reservoir assessment WP5. Exploitation, economic, environmental and social impacts Mid-term Conference WP8. Expertise on exploitation, economic, environmental, social impacts 30 months duration, budget of 2 Millions € Specialised workshops

  17. 7 specialised workshops 2006 2007 • WP3: Defining, exploring, imaging and assessing reservoirs for potential heat exchange (Germany) • WP3: Exploring Supercritical fluid reservoir: a new challenge for geothermal energy (Italy) • WP4: Stimulation of reservoir and induced microseismicity (Switzerland) • WP4: Drilling cost effectiveness and feasibility of high-temperature drilling (Iceland) • WP5: Electricity generation, combined heat and power (France) • WP5: Increasing policy makers awareness and the public acceptance (Greece) • WP9: Risk analysis for development of geothermal energy (Netherlands) Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006

  18. Conditions for a successful co-ordination action • Following the Document Work • An efficient network • The launching conference is the 1st opportunity for all partners to meet and prepare the specialised workshops • The production of the deliverables • Publications (proceedings of workshops and conferences, review articles, analysis, reports..) • Web-site and newsletter • A good co-ordination with the 6th FP Soultz, I-GET, Low Bin projects Engine, Launching conference, Orléans 13-15 February 2006
