  1. May is “We Create Change” M.V.P.S. Join us the whole month of May as we raise money to build schools around the world.

Craig Kielburger: Founder of Free the Children-an organization that supports families and children living in poor countries that do not have the basic needs to survive. • Craig Kielburger is a Canadian speaker, writer, and an activist for the rights of children • He started “Free The Children” when he was 12 years old • He was born on December 17th, 1982 in Thornhill, Ontario

  3. Why Did He Start “Free the Children?” One morning when Craig was 12 years old he was looking in the newspaper for the comics. On the front page of the newspaper, was a story about a young boy named Iqbal Masih that caught his eye.

  4. Who is Iqbal Masih? • Iqbal lived in Pakistan and worked as a child labourer at a carpet factory. This means that Iqbal worked instead of going to school. He was paid poorly, treated unfairly, and worked in conditions that were very dangerous. • After reading about Iqbal’s story, Craig Kielburger wanted to help. He did not like the way Iqbal was being treated and felt that all children around the globe should have equal rights to an education.

What Craig Learned from Iqbal’s Story Was … • “…the bravest voice can live in the smallest body.” Iqbal stood up for his rights & worked very hard to make a difference in the lives of other children. He died when he was just 12 years old. • Iqbal's story inspired Craig Kielburger to start the organization, Free The Children and a campaign called...

  7. Making a difference... • Free the Children & the We Create Change campaign are helping underdeveloped or poor countries build schools so that all children can get an education.

  8. How Can You Help? • Bring in coins such as dimes, nickels, quarters, loonies, and toonieseveryday during the month of May • Listen to announcements for your grades opportunity to participate in fundraising events • Monitor your class contributions posted in the Grade 5 hallway. You’ll get a ‘brick’ coloured next to your class for every $20.00 donated! Which class will donate the most?

  9. The money we raise will be used to build a new school from the ground up-one brick at a time!

Collect coins to fundraise for Free The Children’s Year of Education initiative to build 200 schools and improve access to education in developing communities around the globe. • Collect $20 in coins, and your change can provide a brick for the construction of a new school.
