  2. Level 6 Tests • These tests are designed to stretch those children who are working securely at level 5. • This year the percentage of the number of children at the end of KS2 achieving level 6 in a school will be shown in performance tables.

Reading test • The Level 6 test consists of: • A reading booklet containing three or four texts based on a single theme. • Children are given 10 minutes to read the reading booklet and 50 minutes to answer a range of questions. • As in the Level 3-5 test, the questions are: • shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); and • longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on texts to demonstrate a full understanding.

  4. Grammar Test • The Level 6 test consists of three components: • Paper 1: The extended task. It assesses children’s grammar, punctuation and vocabulary through a short piece of writing. • Paper 2: The short-answer booklet, consists of 18-21 questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. • Paper 3: The spelling task, consists of 15 sentences, which are read aloud by the test administrator. Each sentence has a word missing which the child must complete.

  5. The Mathematics Test • The Level 6 mathematics test consist of: • Paper 1 – a non-calculator paper, lasting 30 minutes • Paper 2 – a calculator available paper, lasting 30 minutes
