  5. Compass • The Chinese simply used a magnetic needle floating on wood in a bowl of water • The needle would turn to point north • Originally used for fortune telling • Become used for navigation around 1000 CE

Fireworks and gun powder • The use of gunpowder in weapons gave those with access to the technology a greater ability to protect themselves from enemies or to conquer and control others. • Changed war forever • Chinese firearms, fireworks and gunpowder were popular items of trade along the Silk Road to Europe.

  10. Paper and Printing Press • By 600 CE, the first printing press was invented in China • first printed newspaper was available in Beijing in 700 CE • woodblock printing.

Seismograph • A seismograph, or seismometer, is an instrument used to detect and record earthquakes. • Around 132 CE, Chinese scientist Chang Heng invented the first seismoscope, an instrument that could register the occurrence of an earthquake. • Heng's invention was called the dragon jar • eight dragonheads arranged around its brim

  12. Seismograph • each dragon had a ball in its mouth. Around the foot of the jar were eight frogs, each directly under a dragonhead • When an earthquake happened a ball dropped from a dragon's mouth and was caught by the frog's mouth. • Based on which frog had the ball, one could tell the direction from which the earthquake came
